So I found a Marshall 401 that I am going to buy.
I was wondering what new tubes cost.
This amp dosent need them now I was just thinking about the future.

Something to keep in mind. Your preamp tubes will outlast the power tubes. That will help keep the cost down, when it is time to replace the power tubes.

yeah power tubes can last 1 year to a few years depending on rate of play. heavy play would be 1-2 years with preamp tubes 2+. its all relative though.

of course some people just run tubes indefinitely. i have rarely had issues, but i did have 1 6l6 power tube blow after about 1.5 years of heavy playing.

i wouldnt go into the purchase assuming you have to take a 100 dollar hit.

i gigged with my splawn for three years, and now (two years later) still have the same power tubes. they are fine (JJ KT88's). it got used hard.

i pulled out original preamp tubes from a '68 bassman for extremes.

but unless you beat the shit out of it constantly its not a major cost concern. its maintenance. it probably costs about as much as keeping a guitar strung, if you restring it regularly.

i have only lost three or four preamp tubes in the last few years, but new amps get new preamp tubes when i get them.

JJ 12ax7's $10 a pop. not a big deal. preamp tubes last a long time.

edit: fixed typo

^ +1 I've never actually had tubes die on me in any of the amps I have owned.

i don't think i have ever put new tubes in an amp and have died. i have only lost power tubes once, and that is in my orange dual terror, and it gets a lot of play. and it has seen a lot of bars as well. they faded a little bit and i just threw new ones in, but they were the original tubes from Orange, so i figured that i could throw some new ones in. the preamp tubes that i have had die were ones that came in the amp before, none have die that were new.

but i think i have 13ish tube amps, (oneis a Music Man hybrid with a tube poweramp), and i really haven't had much issue with any.

I don't replace tubes due to failure much either - I do it more for the fun.

Of course I don't play as often as a lot of you guys.

are you still running =C='s in the splawn?

I don't play my head as much as I would like but I replaced the power tubes and a couple preamp tubes when I bought it. Haven't touched them since (roughly 3 years).

TS - the point is to not worry about it. Tubes can last 20 minutes or 20 years.

Actually, I took them out to put all 4 Mullard EL34s back in to run at full power for awhile. Those Mullards were in the amp when I bought it 2011 and I can't remember if the previous owner told me they were original (2008) or not but he gigged with it extensively. He sold it to by a Bogner Ecstasy and now wants a Quick Rod again.

Anyway, I can't tell much tonal difference but the SED =C= are supposed to be of higher quality. Not sure if I'll fork over that much again.

The only preamp tubes I've every had any issues with are EHX and those shitty no name Chinese tubes that just say China on them.

yeah I have a spare set and that is it. I should have bought a set or 2 when they were even $130 a quad.
