Hey guys, I'm looking to get an OD pedal. Used is preferable, and I have about $100 budget, give or take $20. I'll be running it with my JCM800 2204, playing some stoner/doom/sludge. Sleep, Mastodon, Baroness, Melvins, etc. I've already got a fuzz, but am looking for an OD for when I want "cleaner" distortion.

I've tried Tubescreamers and other tube overdrives (Hardwire, digitech, etc) but have found that they're a little more "intense" than I'd like. I'm not using the OD for its gain/distortion, but rather to boost the amp (volume cranked, gain at 0). I like the feel of playing with an OD. Feels less stiff/easier to play some things, I'm assuming from the natural compression associated with OD pedals. I like the tone and gain from the JCM, so I want something a bit more transparent, not super gainy, but can still give the feel of more "elastic", easier playing.

I was thinking a Fulltone OCD V4, but I don't know if they're quite what I'm looking for (haven't had the chance to try one). I'm open to just about any suggestions as long as it's within criteria.

Thanks guys!

I'll have to look into those. A Timmy actually popped in in my local CL, so I'll see if I can't try his out. I do like the idea of 3 knob pedals as opposed to 4. Not a big issue but I like my simplicity.

And if you want check out the Digitech screamin blues or boss blues driver

I'd scoop the Timmy up if I were you (and the guy has it priced reasonable)

I think the most recent line of Joyo pedals has a clean boost. You might want to take 5 minutes to research what it is a clone of though.

I use the OCD for exactly that and it works pretty well through a Mesa. It has less tonal color and compression than a TS9. Try one and see if it fits.

As said before, Soul Food. Bought it for 69 Euros, it includes a power adapter and holy crap it sounds great. I mostly use it for adding that extra small od for the cleans not sounding too clean.

On meth you would.

I think what you're looking for instead is a clean boost. Suhr and Xotic make great ones.

Personally I use the G&L Double Barrel. The added Bass and Treble contour switches on the pedal make playing live much easier.

Those'd be my picks, in that order (and out of what I've tried).

Oh the mooer pure boost is quite nice too if you can get it cheap enough.

I'll have to put the Classic T models on my to-try list. Shame the finish options there are Anachronism Gold, Nuclear Waste and Aged Clown, because in principle the plaintop is right up my alley.

Presumably because the CCF (Combined Corksniffing Forces) of MLP and Gibson forums would rise up against them, plunging the land into war.

Sweet, thanks everyone! I'll see about finding the dude in CL with the Timmy to try it out, but the Soul Food sounds pretty good for how inexpensive it is. I'm just a wee bit apprehensive about EHX though... never really found a pedal I liked enough from them to keep (especially the Muffs).

But, this isn't a muff so I guess it's worth a shot! Thanks again everyone.

it's also a clone of a non-EHX pedal (klon centaur) so that might help

a TS9, or a Maxon OD-1 would be really nice, both good at that transparent boost.

A bargain option is the Boss BD-2 Blues Driver, Ive been using it a clean boost for years, it really is solid at that, and usually overlooked.

Low Peak (LP) setting gives very little tone coloration.

Can't say I'd recommend it unless you want a beefy, almost distortion, OD. You'd be better off with something everyone else has suggested; Soul Food or Timmy.

The OCD may not be transparent, but MAN does it slam that front end. You can do a LOT with it too. Definitely great to pick up used, very easy resale on it too. Took less than 8 hours for mine to sell online.

Timmy or Soul Food. The Soul Food is a darker sounding pedal, the Timmy is probably the more transparent of the two.
