Hello fellow musicians, I am currently looking for a power amp so I can connect my digitech GSP 2101 preamp effects. I want to be able to hook straight to my 300 watt 4*12 cab. Any suggestions on a inexpensive power amp. What are the brands out there as well.

get a used Crate powerblock if you want small and light.

You can get some used carvin and peavey power amps for pretty cheap

"Inexpensive" is not a precise word <G>.

Carvins are relatively inexpensive.

The HD1500 (http://www.carvinguitars.com/hdseries/) will provide anything from 210W RMS on a single channel to an 8-ohm load (which would work just fine with your 4x12) to 1400W RMS bridged/mono to a 4-ohm load (which works fine with a pair of my 8-ohm cabinets that are capable of handling up to 900W each. $269 9 lbs.

If you're looking at power amps, you really need to understand what the specs are that you're looking at.

The Crate Powerblock will give you 150W into an 8 ohm mono load, but at 10% THD (Total Harmonic Distortion). The Carvin will give you up to 1400W, but at 0.1% THD (one one-hundredth the distortion level). The Crate is tiny and weighs about half what the Carvin does, but the Carvin is rack mountable.

The Crate was discontinued, I believe, in 2006 or 2007. There were a ton of Q&A issues at its $199 price and sales were dismal. The company was sold and the purchasing company sold the Crates off for $99 each in a GC blowout.

Behringer or Samson.

Using digital processing all the manipulation is in the processor so you don't need to colour the sound subsequently. All you need is a clean power amp with plenty of headroom.

For amps, mixers and rack products I have been very pleased with them relative to price. You have to compare apples with apples.
