Hello all,

I am wondering if my Marshall DSL40C has a problem. With the guitar unplugged, in the gain "Lead 1" channel, and the volume at about 9:00, there is quite a bit of white noise. Kind of like a constant fizzing. There are no crackles really or any of that, but just a lot of constant fizzing white noise. This drastically decreases when in the clean channel.

It sounds just like this, except I do not have any popping noises like he does:

Is this normal? It gets fairly loud, and I'm wondering if a noise gate would help? I am most worried there is something wrong with the amp. When I'm in my room I usually only play at a volume of MAYBE 1, and in that case it's not as noticeable. But on the occasions I want to play loud it is fairly noticeable. Thanks!

that's pretty normal for a high gain stage.

So then how is it that on these professional reviews of this amp (Sweetwater did a review with some sample playing), I do not hear these noises? There are parts when they guy is not talking but the amp is mic'd and I hear no noise:

they are either using a noise suppressor in the chain or using a noise filter on the track.

if the noise is unbearable it could also be a slightly noisy tube.

The review amps they have tubed to be quiet before they record.

i agree. pretty much normal for that at high gain at a higher volume. it could be a bad tube as well, but i still think its normal.

They've got Shug 12AX7A crap in them, don't they?
A 7th gen Shugang has gone noisy? Can such things be?

It's always gonna be noisy but man, throw some JJ's into the preamp and at least give it a fighting chance.
And turf that shitty speaker out too. That won't have anything to do with the noise but that amp needs all the help it can get.

Lol, I'm already on it man. I'm gonna be putting a creamback in it soon! And alright, maybe I'll try some different preamp tubes. Will that actually make a noticeable difference?

Maybe. Gotta be done anyway, if only for tone.
Don't be tempted to throw ECC803's into it. They'll squeal.
