Hi! How does the Peavey 6505 mini with EL84 compare to the bigger brothers loaded with 6L6 power tubes? I intend to use it for studio to capture an american high gain metal tube amp sound.

Pretty sure it's still on preorder, so no one's going to have any real world experience with it.

Fluff talked about it in a recent FAQ Monday though.

No doubt it will sound good, but I'd like to hear an explanation how they managed to reduce the amount of preamp tubes from 5 to 3 and keep it sounding like 6505. If one of the tubes is phase inverter then that leaves only 2 tubes for gain stages.

Solid state stuff in the gain channel?

That's my thought/concern as well.

Or phase inverter which may be the preferable choice since the 6505 gets most of its tone from the preamp. No need to get phase inverter tube distortion from cranking the volume. A clean SS phase inverter should do that job perfectly.

FX loop is definetly solid state, but I dont give a shit about that.

Maybe the finally realized that no one turns the gain up past 6 on the lead channel

i was also leery to hear that there are less preamp tubes. i would like to think that peavey wouldn't steep that low.

but i haven't tried one so i honestly don't know.

i imagine the amp would sound very different with the el84's but it may not mean necessarily that its bad.

That's the ideal situation though, SS PI & loop.

Tube loops are dumb anyway.

For effects, yeah but they can make a good boost circuit. Not that a 6505 really needs one though.
