Who in your opinion is the best music producer?

For me, I like George Martin quite a bit for his creativity and how he could tie in his classical training. I also am always really impressed with Bonobo's sound, and although I wouldn't consider them the "best," Boards Of Canada are really creative and have a great style. The go through so many different methods of altering a sound that have a lot that are just about impossible to recreate.

However, just talking about production, I think Aphex Twin is totally brilliant and he wins for me. Incredibly perfect, clean, and the amount of sounds he uses is ridiculous. Even in his more simple stuff there are so many different things going on. I mean check out the list of equipment used on his last album:

Yeah he's pretty great

And also possibly crazy

I've always had a big soft spot for George Martin, probably in-part because I grew up on The Beatles, so nostalgia + great producer = big music production mancrush. Brian Wilson deserves a nod too, even if it's nothing to write home about in modern times, the production on Pet Sounds was groundbreaking in 1966.

I also like the mix of Joe Satriani's early stuff, especially after reading how weird and clever they had to get to get the job done with the limited time and budget for Not Of This Earth, so I'll throw John Cuniberti in there too. Terry Brown also deserves a nod for producing a lot of albums from Rush's heyday. Eddie Kramer also merits mentioning, though he's better known for engineering work than production(Engineering credits? Hendrix, Zeppelin, Clapton, Frampton, etc.. Production credits? KISS and...not much else to write home about).

On the come up we were listening to Grateful Dead and the music started passing through my bowel and out my arsehole as this violet stream of light. I shat music. It was beautiful.

Rob Cavallo and Jerry Finn were one helluva team (The Muffs, Jawbreaker, Pre-CLA Green Day)
Jimmy Iovine (Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks, The Pretenders)
Jack Endino (Countless NW punk bands, His style IS the Seattle sound)
Larry Crane (solely for his work on Elliott Smith's stuff, though he's been involved in other great projects)
Butch Vig (great but IMO Nevermind is one of his best works as a producer but not as an engineer, sadly it overshadows everything else he's done)

I like the producers who also have a hand in arrangements and orchestral type stuff. But when I think of great producers I think of these fellas:

George Martin & Phil Spector - Beatles obviously
Jack Nitsche - his work on Neil Young's Harvest, my god
Fleming Rasmussen - Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets set the metal producing bar
Brian Wilson - sound pet producer :P
Butch Vig
Brendon O'Brien
Nigel Godrich
Jimmy Miller - Exile on main street

and yes Rick Rubin, even if he doesn't like Hendrix
