Venezuela's product shortages have become so severe that some hotels in that country are asking guests to bring their own toilet paper and soap, a local tourism industry spokesman said on Wednesday….

"It's an extreme situation," says Xinia Camacho, owner of a 20-room boutique hotel in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada national park. "For over a year we haven't had toilet paper, soap, any kind of milk, coffee or sugar. So we have to tell our guests to come prepared."…

Venezuela is messed up, we need to diplomacy trades for oil rather than demonize and overthrow to get less reliance on middle east

not gonna bother with this but let me just give you one thing to think about

people here had to go through sleeping with axes under their pillows in case nazis tried to drag them off to camps at night and not being allowed to speak their own language and then through having to wait in lines for baby diapers and having one brand of toothpaste to choose from when the crisis was at it's worst

most of them still agree that capitalist life with all it's consumerism and 'freedom' is more or less equal to living like an animal

What reliance? Neither Canada nor the US needs to import oil, and only export restrictions keep the US from being a net exporter.

I'm not opposed to importing oil though, I think we should keep buying it while it's cheap and keep ours in the ground, then when the imports run out we'll just keep merrily sailing along on our internal reserves.

Which is why I said "alleged socialism", because it's clearly not...

Opinions vary. I suspect that the number of folks who want to immigrate to the US tends to diminish your claim?

Perhaps, but I think you missed mine first?

I was making a poor pun whilst also commenting that fake socialism isn't working out very well for Vz.

And of course all the internet socialists piled on with indirect "rebuttals", because apparently that's the best they could do.

Nah, I got your point just fine.

I'm trying to tell you that having to bring your own TP to a hotel is hardly as horrible and animalistic as you seem to think it is. While I'm sure the situation in Vuvuzela is pretty bad people not having a supermarket filled with crap they don't need is hardly a tale-tale sign of a system not working.

I've had to bring my own towels and TP to hotels and I didn't really mind. Just cause you aren't getting shit thrown in your face doesn't make you any less human or well off.

Your life, your opinion.

I'll stick with my supermarkets full of crap I don't need, music stores full of crap I don't need, furniture stores full of crap I don't need, pretty much every kind of store possible, all full of crap I don't need.

All courtesy of a mix of capitalism, socialism and fortuitous natural resources.

The idea of many socialist principles working in our present-day-context (USA-speaking) in order to get to an 'authentic communism' seems wrong and misguided. Given the extent of public:private coercion and cronyism -- and the personality types of many that dominate the public sector, for the most part -- stronger regulations will not be the 'fix' in-itself, as would increasing public's power.

Our system is fine 'as is', if we were to simply have more accountability and transparency on both sides.

Not really if going just by reddit pics Ive seen of Cuban's living conditions/quality of life in general.

But it will be interesting to see how their economy improves as US removes sanctions and improves trade relations, assuming that older Cuban-Americans that are still very mad that all of their stuff was taken and stamped with "GOVT PROPERTY" will not be taken into account in re-establishing diplomatic relations.

My friend went out on holiday there a few times, went to the poor parts, its as bad as the ghettos in US and other places, not worse. Of course there's better and worse areas

A Socialist for the most part would assume that there would not be any 'poor parts' in relation to others if given optimal resource allocations (apart from maybe some doctor/engineer/etc incentive).

While their poor parts may be similar to ours, there is most likely more of those poor parts there than here [cit. needed]. Given their favorable-enough GDP, this shows that their system is not very good, regardless of less US trade.

Isn't cuba still pure communism though?

Scandinavian countries use very socialist polices and they have the highest quality of life. Lowest poverty rates, highest education/literacy rates ect.

And I said that the best system would be capitalism with socialist polices. Like a good welfare system, decent minimum wage, while still having incentives to work harder/get better jobs to earn more money. I think that people on the bottom rungs of the ladder should be able to afford a house, and live without worrying about finding money for bills/food, or having to choose between the two

I was merely responding to "Cuba has been running fine for years now tho lol".

While Scandinavia seems pretty dandy, we must also realize that their present-day-situation/history is different (smaller country, natural resources being favorable for better forms of energy, history, etc.), and therefore we cannot simply "cookie-cutter" their methods and ways of doing things onto us and assume that it will create the same results.
