Hi! I am currently looking into buying a Blackstar ID:260TVP (two 60 watt speakers) or the ID:100TVP head and the matching cabinet (side question has anyone owned one of these and if so what's your oppnion on them?) I am 15 and starting to practice a lot with a band and my 15 watt digital amp won't work. Would getting the half stack be over kill? I love the looks of one, but they look like a pain to carry around. And it might be TO loud. Though I may need a loud amp in the future for gigs. And could the half stack play quiet enough so I won't drive my parents crazy? There is also a 60 watt head as well that I might consider. So my question is. Will the half stack be over kill? And if so should I go for the ID:260TVP

I don't think the half stack would be over kill, combos aren't exactly easy to carry around either. You can always put the cab on casters though which makes it easier. It won't be much that much louder than a combo either.

Answer these 3 questions and maybe we can recommend something better or more suited:
-What kind of music?
-Budget?
-Location?

i don't think that the blackstar you listed sounds that great. i haven't played one, but at $600 for a SS amp with models (may not be digital modeling i don't know) but you could probably do better for the buck,

i don't know what you are into, and we need more information, but for that you could get anything from a JSX combo to a 6505+ combo, to a marshall DSL, etc.

The big part about those amps are that they sound and feel as close to a valve amp as possible without the hassle of tubes so that's why i want to buy one

Tubes aren't a big hassle, man. Put that out of your head.

i doubt they respond to dynamics like a tube amp.

as cath said, tubes aren't a hassle. most cases they last for a few years, if you are using it a lot at high volumes, maybe 3 (easily more) on power tubes, and preamp tubes can last stupid long, a guy at my church has a 60's brownface with the original tubes in. that isn't normal, but i have only actually had maybe three preamp tubes fail on me in the last decade.

i don't know how people get it in their heads that tube amps are a pain in the ass to maintain. they are simple, and much more repairable if something were to fail.

One thing about Blackstar is that they are gaining a reputation for decent sounding amps, but with poor quality control. A lot of the big complaints is noisy pots, and poor craftsmanship. I have a Blackstar 4x12 cabinet loaded with Celestion speakers and it sounds good paired with my Ampeg VH140C, but good luck finding one of those.

Don't be intimidated by tubes, they aren't that much of a hassle, especially when you consider the high cost of repairing solid state amps. What I would do is go to a music store and try out everything within your budget, and then go with your gut. Plenty of guitarists have had success with tubes and solid state, so go with the amp that resonates the best with you, and will be loud enough to jam with a drummer.

Hi guys. I play mostly stuff like AC/DC and Guns and Roses to stuff like Pierce the Veil and Black Veil Brides and occasionally some hard core metal lol

Yes, that's the ad copy from the marketing department.

What it isn't is reality.

Of the 9 tube amps I've got sitting around, I've spent perhaps a total of $300 over the last 5 years buying tubes, and that mostly because I wanted to, not because I needed to.

personally...I think a half stack would be overkill. Hell...I didnt buy a half stack until I was like 18 or 19...and when I did it was only because I started playing larger/un-mic'd venues with my band. So...you're better off with a combo. Most larger combos can keep decent volume with a band and small venues...which will usually mic your amp anyway. Whats your budget???

I know this will sound stupid. But the only reason I wanted a half stack is because they look badass! My budget is about $700 give or take.

That doesn't sound stupid, it's probably one of the most common reasons that a huge percentage of half and full stacks have been purchased.

That being said, requiring that visual image isn't going to allow you as much freedom to get the best sound for your budget.

You have to decide what's most important to YOU.

Go in halfsies and get a lunchbox head with a 1x12 cabinet - not a stack, although almost as expensive sometimes. That being said, even a 50 watt Marshall JCM 900 stack is loud as hell, be forewarned. 15 watts will clear drums with ease (while sacrificing some clean headroom), 30 watts is more than enough to command a quality tone in respectable venue. If its just you, in your apartment, Id suggest a Nigh train, a Dark Terror, or that HT-5 that Blackstar made years ago. You want to splurge, find a Marshall JCM900 combo somewhere, and get some bad ass pedals, its still 50 watts, but hey.... although it just doesn't have the look

and I agree that's a real thing. That's why I went with the head and speaker, looks pretty slick.

Good luck man - I hope you get what your looking for.

For that kind of music I'd say Traynor YCV50B.

Don't buy the SS marketing hype, that's all that it is. For the styles you listed you pretty much need tube.

+1

That Traynor YCV50B is a hella good amp.

Those low and mid gain tones are the hardest to achieve with solid state or modeling in my experience.

Where are you located roughly GuitarGuy?

nah...

just give me a city, a budget and a genre and it is pretty easy.

i usually put myself in the TS's position with said parameters and then go hunting. It is actually kind of fun.

I didn't even check the local Guitar Center or Sam Ash type places.
