Basically just looking for something that do well what the 6505 does poorly. Preferably a combo amp. I'm not looking to buy any time soon but I do want to know what my options should be so I know what to keep an eye out for. I'd like to keep the amp below ~700 retail, but I can wiggle a bit.

The amp will be used for recording in a home studio, no gigging. I currently own a Strat but I'll be adding an LP of some kind or another (whether it be an Agile or Gibby) in the near future.

Possibly a marshall DSL if you want british distortion or a fender something or other if you just want cleans.

How are the cleans on the DSL? Are you referring to the new DSL40/15 combo amps?

You can go the amp sim route first and figure out exactly what you want or what the amp sims are lacking and get a real amp to fill the void.

Lots of free or I expensive ones to get you going - ReValver, LePou, etc.

If we're just naming amps then a Mesa Mark V or Roadking come to mind for all of the versatile sounds along with the classic Fenders and Vox. Go Engl Powerball II for something different.

Fender MIM Strat

Peavey Vypyr 30

Amp sims are cool and I appreciate what they have done for the music industry, however I am in a position where I would rather not rely on someone else's engineering (as far as mic positioning and things like that for emulated cabinet responses) for sound. The "void" I would be filling would be my creative void as an audio engineer, not anything sonic. I think amp sims sound great, I just don't find them to be as creative.

Cool, I was thinking you could use them to narrow down your search. Something like this crunch channel on the PB II is close or the cleans on the Classic 30 are what I was looking for, let me try the real thing.

I think you need a sparkling clean amp, something like a Fender Blues Deville or one of the other big tube combos. Marshall Plexi will be nice for clean tones as well. If you plan to record enough high gain, maybe another high gain flavored amp like Mesa Mini Rectifier so you can add some different shades of gain. Maybe a Mark V or the Mini Mark they just released as that will cover clean tones as well.

I would pair it with a Carvin Belaire (2x12) , Carvin Nomad (1x12) or VT 50 head .... it will do everything the Peavey does not and it's easy on the wallet new direct from Carvin or used on Ebay

Theoretically: Bogner XTC or Mark V
Budget: Some kind of Fender like a Hot Rod, Blues etc..

Vox AC30 for cleans, since the 6505 has none. Add a tube screamer to the 6505 for leads and your bases are pretty well covered.

the Carvin is in your budget , cleans are beautiful on channel 1 , channel 2 is a mild crunch ( I do have one among many other amp and brands ) ..... heres a video of a repair shop that had a bad tube , he runs the scope and equipment on it and is very impressed with it , this video is not a advertisement for Carvin , maybe Cathard can comment about the equipment the Tech is using , but this Tech was impressed with it and I can vouch for the sound ( I also owned a Peavey 6505 112 that I sold just recently and this Carvin will go where the Peavey can't , the two would go great together for a 4 channel set up )

i'd go for either a Fender or a Peavey Classic for good clean tones.you have the distortion end covered already.

I really think you should look at the Mesa mark 3 or 4. Yeah its a few more bucks, but I think it would do you want and more.

Any good way for me to know how this is going to sound? Most of the youtube videos on this seem to be people who don't know how to mic something up, and the only one that looks professionally done is a Kemper profile https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=mesa+boogie+dual+caliber+dc-3

and on top of that, the Kemper video is a demo of its metal tone, but I want to hear its cleans/crunch

This is about the best I can find

There is also the DC2, DC5 and DC10 though they are all different from what I can understand, though mostly just powertubes, combo size and speakers.

DC5 is 6L6 and Eminence Speaker instead of EL84 and V30

I paid $780 for my mkiv and I see mkiii's for $800 on a semi regular basis. Some stripes are more some less. But they are out there.

Hmm the cleans on it do sound pretty warm for being recorded on a phone, its hard for me to see on the camera he used because I have horrible eyesight but it looked like mostly had the EQs pretty much around noon so I bet with some dialing I can get it sounding pretty great. I'll for sure keep this amp in mind

In case you didn't know, the RM20 has a record out complete with a half decent speaker emulation. Dummy load switch too so you can do it silently.

OP- you could look into music man for a good clean amp. I think i paid around $320 for my combo. Yes it is hybrid, but it is stunning for cleans. It takes pedals very well too. Mine is a hd212 130. Killer and cheap.
