i want a one channel amp with distortion levels good enough for all types of punk rock and won't kill anyone volume wise. what amps are out there?
#2
Why 1 channel? you really limit yourself and most are not ideal for what you want .

Also what is your deff of "all punk rock"?

I listen to lots of punk and it can be night and day sound wise.

But you can just not use the clean channel and get a great sounding 2 or 3 channel amp.

Marshall JCM900 SL-X is one of the only 1 channel amps that will do what you want just fine.'
Marshall JCM2000 DSL50/100 is a 2 channel amp, but it sounds great for punk (I use one)

Orange- A punk rock wet dream
"Your sound is in your hands as much as anything. It's the way you pick, and the way you hold the guitar, more than it is the amp or the guitar you use." -- Stevie Ray Vaughan

"Anybody can play. The note is only 20 percent. The attitude of the motherfucker who plays it is 80 percent." -- Miles Davis

A bit of an awkward question considering most punk rock tones came out of necessity because there wasn't anything better for them to use (well there early sounds anyway). Hence why alot of punk does sound very different from each other. It's really not the sound but the structure and "attitude" that makes punk. Really you should go to a music store and just try every amp within budget and see what you like.

Unless there is a specific reason why you must nail this X tone.

You would need to be more specific on bands because the clash/ramones/sexpistol/minor threat/black flag/dead Kennedy/integrity/anti-nowhere league/discharge/off spring/green day/ blink 192/bad religion and rancid all sound different using in some cases very different gear ranging for driven plexi marshal's to modern gain duel recs to clean fender/vox amps etc

You can however nail most of these tones on a multi channel amp however... But on a one channel amp your not going to get half of them. There is no jack of all trades amp that only has one channels.

Also is this amp going to be used live?practive or at home most of the time because again that's something we need to consider.

So buy whatever you like the sound of and that's suitable from a guitar store near you or check out some demo's online because doing a recommendation is not going to be easy with the limitations espicailly if you dropping a 1000 dollars into this you may want to step back and think.

Are be alot more specific and realistic. If it was a multi channel amp recommending something would be easier as well as knowing what specifically you want tone wise aswell as what you need this amp for.

The ones that have EL34 tubes (50 or 100 watt). The 5881(6l6) versions are nice, but the EL34 is the better version if I was buying for myself.

+1. These are hard to find and can be expensive. Everyone is always trying to offload their 5881 versions. There is a notable difference IMO.

I use an RM100 or RM20 for punk. Used to use a JCM900 Dual Reverb or my Abbey.
Any of the JCM900's will work well. The SL/X is by far the best but I saw Steve Jones use a Dual Reverb on the Pistol's reunion tour and it sounded right. The JCM900 Mark 3 is good too. It can be pretty much turned into an 800 with a pair of side cutters.

I still don't get why people recommend this piece of crap.

I mean, 1000$ right? That's about 800€ at the moment. Get an orange rockerverb, get a diezel einstein, get a jcm 800, get a VHT pitbull, peavey XXX or even a 5150 will do lots better then the SL-X. There must be SOMETHING you can get locally for 1000$ that is way better than that.

JCM 900 DR can be had for super cheap on occasion, same with a Peavey VTM, but if you want to spend you're full budget I'd opt for a JCM 900 SL-X or a JCM 2000 DSL (which may be a bit cheaper). Laney VH100r too I guess

The JCM900 Mark 3 is a great punk amp too and substantially cheaper. You just have to snip out the clipper and it's effectively a JCM800 2203 with a second master volume.

SL-X is one of the gnarliest amps I've played.

Besides, OP wants to play punk. Yeah there's way nicer, way more refined amps in his budget. But I doubt any of them can go toe to toe with an SL-X for aggression.

I wouldn't even put money down on a bet between an SL-X and a 5150.

Agreed. I think a Mk3 would probably suit him the best - as long as he chops out the clipper bridge.
2203 with second volume knob. Good thing.

Well, that is offcourse possible. I'll give it another try if the occasion passes.
I said 1000$ because that is his budget. If I were him, I'd get an Orange RV 50 second hand, which kinda puts every Marshall under 1k to shame if you ask me (except for the JCM800). Other options from the top of my head would be the peavey XXX, 6505(+), VHT pitbull (=> HELL YEAH!), JCM 800, Laney Ironheart, Engl blackmore, ...

The Engl and the Orange used are way out of budget where TS lives

6505(+) are too modern for most of what TS wants.

The XXX would work, but deff not my first choice at all

JCM800 would be OK for the earlier stuff, but not heavy enough for the 90's/00's punk without a boost

VHT pittbull would work fine but you would want the CL version

The Laney Ironheart is too modern, the Laney GH/Vh series would work great though

1. Ok, fair enough.
2. I disagree: put the "clean" channel in OD mode, and you have instant ballsy punk sound.
3. Then add a boost (maxon OD808 costs about 50$ second hand and is a great boost)
4. Then get the CL version
5. True, I just like the Ironheart better personally :p

And actually for $1000 TS could score a Splawn QR or Pro-comp if he is patient which would be a better choice than anything listed in this thread
