Hey everyone,

I've been having some tone problems with my 5150 combo for quite a while - changed tubes, sent to a tech (who blamed the JJ tubes), etc.

To "fix" the problem I bought a Mesa Roadster

I went to A/B the Mesa and Peavey the other day and when I went to switch the 5150 on, nothing. . . . No LED's, just dead.

I quick jiggle of the power cable and bam, life.

The tone problems I was chasing was that the amp just sounded blah. . . No life at all.

Now I'm wondering if there was a voltage issue from a bad power connection. I'm not sure if this is possible or not though. If it is possible then why didn't the tech find it?

The amp still has the original power cable which is hard wired to the board, not a removable type.

Has anybody seen something like this before or have any insight?

I'm guessing I need to pull the board and replace the power cable?

Thanks!

Busted wire or bad solder joint. Either is a 10 minute fix.

Yeah, I realize the power cable has some issues and needs to be replaced but any insight on dirty/partial power making the amp sound blah? Or does the circuitry require X amount of volts or amps to even power up?

I know electronics and flakey power can do all sorts of crazy things.

Basically I don't want to put any more $ into this amp after all of the tubes, speakers, etc and it still sounds neutered. . .

you know what you need to do, you said it yourself.

and it is really cheap.

you know electronics,

and know a possible cheaply fixed problem. i don't see what is missing

While it's not real likely that the power cord is the source of your tonal concerns, until you get it fixed there's really no point in worrying about them.

So an update here. Finally had the time (been away) to replace the power cable, put it all back together and BAM! it's all working as it ought to again. Now I hadn't played this amp much since I got the Mesa but the clarity seems to be much better and it has that bite that was lacking before.

Hopefully it was the power cable and I didn't knock something else back that was loose while I was in there. I guess only time will tell.

Tubes, speakers, and a trip to the tech (really irked over this) all with no result. F'ing power cable - Go figure.

^^Congrats! After I paid a "tech" $60 to tell me he "don't work on solid state circuit boards" (my 6505+ is not solid state, it simply has a PCB inside, as you know), I've sworn off techs completely. (No offense to any techs here or out there that actually know what they're doing.)

Anyway, if you do enough research and do some digging, you can fix just about anything -- for a fraction of the cost of a "professional" fix.

Or you can electrocute yourself rather nicely

You should have not paid that tech...that's a pure ripoff, plain and simple.
