Of course you gotta have talent, you gotta a FB page, maybe even a soundcloud, but a lot of people have this and why don't they become famous? What make things go viral? Is there some sort of wizardy involved and the gods of the music industry constantly trying to manipulate the scene? A lot of people here have talent I'm sure, but why aren't you guys famous?

I know there's plenty involved into making you famous, and going into the right path is one....but how do you find it? I wish I can be famous...

So what would you do to get your name out there? I hope we can get creative here, but nonetheless informative.

Posting in message boards helps.

There's no such thing; there never was. Where I am going you cannot follow me now.

1. work for years
2. constantly try to get label attention
3. tour your butt off
4. go deep in the hole financially
5. get lucky
6. pledge your soul to satan
7. die

And that is how your band becomes successful

Fame is highly overrated, but if you must...

Be able to attract a crowd anywhere. On the street, in a dive bar, on youtube, at the beach... anywhere. That's it. No label wants to talk to you until you can do this.

SO basically I have no chance, cuz like my music makes people relaxed and heck I become sleepy listening to my songs too! So why does Norah Jones, with her monotonous voice, get famous? Cuz she looks good perhaps? I don't really know.

but which place? Where can I promote my music outside that won't get me arrested :L Also, how do you even ask around clubs/cafes that you'd like to perform if you haven't got any experience. Where do you gain experience?

OK serious answer, shameless self promotion and saturation. You have to make yourself a business as in you need to make your music a product that can sell. You need to sell you and you need to sell it well.

Now, since I am not famous nor do I have absolutely no understanding of the music business my advice is worth nil.

Norah Jones is awesome. She looks good and she can always attract a crowd with her music. She also grew up around skilled musicians in a Texas performing arts school.

Learn the ropes. Get into music programs in school and develop a circle of musician friends you can jam with and gig together. Learn as much as you can from each other. Go busking on the street, at the subway station, play backyard parties and every dog and pony show you can find. This is the Van Halen formula and still works today.

If you do find fame, it will annoy you.

I guess nurture and nature has something to do with it. Sadly, my school got no music programs and most of the kids in my highschool/college (I go to both) aren't really into the music scene I'm into. I'm clawing hard here, sometimes I feel like giving up cuz I really can't find anyone I can connect to and I'm pretty sociable. They are mostly into the hip hop/rap subculture. I'm the indie/alternative acoustic type. So my best bet would probably be driving down to Tennessee and I'll start my career there lol

1. Get a "sensible" haircut.
2. Buy a set of "sensible" clothes...and while you're at it, get some "sensible" shoes.
3. Take a shower.
4. Hire an Agent.
5. Hire an Accountant.
6. Hire a Publicist.
7. Hire a Lawyer.
8. Hire a Psychologist/Psychiatrist.
9. Hire a Private Detective to watch all of the above mentioned, and to dig up some dirt
on them and others when necessary.
10. Hire a Brain Surgeon to perform a frontal lobe lobotomy on you.

If all of this fails, then....

You'd better have the proper combination of talent, work ethic, and good looks to get people to notice you...although having a frontal lobe lobotomy performed on you might hamper your efforts...that is unless you're looking to be the next J%$#@n B%$#@r or
the next K@!#a W!@t.

1. check, that classic undercut I wear it.
2. check, them sensible clothes I own it.
3. check, I take showers, they know it.
4-10. Basically get into a record label <---how do you even send materials to 'em?

I think I've got the work ethic, I think I look good , and I can write my own songs and play multiple instruments....aw hell I'm still young, I'll just see where the road takes me. I should start posting Youtube covers to gain some attention, then I can release an original.

I'm anxious because once I get into college, I know I won't be able to pursue my passion anymore since I've got to learn miRNAs and telomeres and crap. That's why I wanna be famous, is that a legit thing to say?

So I imagine this....I walk in with a fedora in my head and a black button up shirt and some black skinny jeans and a black tie. Sits in a corner, catch the eye of a lady, smile, drink fruit punch, and play my guitar? Sounds cool actually, but my strength isn't guitar playing but rather my melody and voice...I ain't got a manly, powerful voice sadly.

It's worked for lots of people. They've not really got any outstanding talent but radio 1 and the NME say they're brilliant so people buy their records.

Find rising stars on youtube that use music at the end of their videos and offer to let them use yours free of charge. Most will seem to busy, but eventually one will answer back or use the music.

It's gotten me 1,000,000+ listens just by doing that.

For "shopping" the record labels you will need to...

1. Record a demo of yourself/band.
2. Write a personal/band Bio.
3. Hire a music/entertainment industry lawyer to represent you/band when presenting the Demo/Bio package to the record labels. This step is necessary due to the fact that record labels won't accept Demo/Bio packages that are not solicited by lawyers due to legal liabilities of accepting unsolicited material.

Bear in mind that this a highly simplified explanation of the process.
I suggest that you read up on the subject before actively sending out Demo/Bio packages.
Because you only have one chance to make a first impression, and record labels tend to shy away from artists who come off as unprofessional.

What is your definition of fame? That will shed some light on the conversation.

There is no formula to become famous.

If you are modest in your definition of fame, then you might reach that point of success. But, to get there, it requires more than social media pages. You have to be more than a good musician, you have to be a performer, a producer, a manager, a marketer. You have to sell yourself. You have to research venues, send your demo to bands in a similar genre and book shows with them, load up a van and travel the country. It's expensive and hard work. That is how you get name recognition. And even then, that isn't how most would define being famous. A lot of great bands play with a good sized following, and they don't get air play on the radio, they don't rake in millions of dollars, and they are on smaller labels with limited resources.

If you want to make it big - big - big, well you're about a decade behind the ball. You said you play alt. indie type music. Well, that genre is midway through playing itself out from a label perspective. Look at music history. Grunge had it's run. If you were in a grunge band in 1998, no label was going to look at you, even if your band was really good. The music you like and play today is not the music of tomorrow. It is the music that labels have already invested in and already have their cash-cows. You need to be cutting edge - the trend of tomorrow, and then also prove to the label that this is what average joe will want to listen to down the road. To be famous, you have to prove that you can make rich people even richer by investing in you. Playing what is popular today, and has been since 2005, isn't a good formula for being famous tomorrow.

I look at my life in a new light.
**** it- give me two mics, I write songs for me. **** what you like
You probably hear me rap half-hearted, 'cause I don't like rap anyway, I'm just tryna get my porno career started.
Every place and event- been there, done that- shit, Dre stuck me in a suitcase when he went.
Want a deal? Study these five chapters:
Lesson One: Throw demos as hard as you can at signed rappers
Lesson Two: Face em and diss 'em. Don't give em a demo- kidnap 'em, and make em come to your basement and listen.
Lesson Three: Get a job at a label. Switch demos with Canibus and put yours on the owner's table.
Lesson Four: Know you've heard this before. "Hey let me get your number I'll call you tomorrow, for sure!" Don't act like a fan. You wanna get signed? Get the whitest A&R you can find, pull him aside and rap as whack as you can.
Lesson Five: get a hook-up at Jive, dress up like ICP and have them come see you perform live.
And that's the key, but when you see me on the street, I ain't giving you shit, bitch, don't even bother asking me.

Alternatively, make yourself extremely eccentric by doing some shit like wearing a mask and a KFC bucket.

All that means is that a million 14 year old girls passively heard 5 seconds of sound before they switched to the next lol sooo random YouTube blogger's video. Doesn't really make you any more famous than the composer of any TV jingle... and their getting paid for it.
