So the dwarf planet series has started to raise some discussion in the science world.

WTF are these bright spots on this dwarf planet?

Recently Dawn spacecraft sent back a closer picture of the celestial body.

^Two bright spots behaving differently. One of them not showing up under infrared.

So Pit, what do you think this shit is?

Yes, you made a good choice sharing this info with the NASA employees of the pit so we could discuss and come to the conclusion that the Infinity War has begun

i thought the general consensus was that it was water ice that is sublimating away because a recent impact dug below the surface enough to expose it

i mean its been kind of known for a while ceres has a water ice layer under the crust i think

This is another interesting article about it

http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2015/06/10/ceres_weird_white_spots_are_still_weird.html

Do you see the dark spray of material to the right of the crater, extending up and down? I fiddled with the contrast a bit in the image above to bring it out. That looks like the pattern you get when an impact happens at very low angle and material splashes out. It’s arc-shaped, and the apex appears to be centered on the crater center.

all my research thus far has drawn me to the conclusion that they rather seem to look like bright spots on the surface of a dwarf planet

eh normally I'd disagree (space is cool) but seriously what was with that porn shit? is it going to hurt space's feelings or something?

From Nasa

“…exposed ice would sublime, that is, evaporate into the vacuum of space. An impact could excavate through dirt and into ice below and leave a temporary exposure but this would not last long. If it is ice we need a way to replenish the ice or keep it clean from dust and debris so we can see it. So any mechanism for producing the bright spots seems to be complicated. I am not expecting a trivial solution to this conundrum.”

Yes, the recent picture that just shows the shiny spot that we saw 2 months ago, just larger and better resolution.

And 2 months ago scientist were excited about this... it has just taken everyone else this long to get excited.

...Are you serious?

It went viral the moment NASA released the first pics. What makes you think there's some sort of hype delay?

Also, the recent picture shows the spots more scattered as well as that info from the article I posted last page. The pic matters for those who care.

My gay friend was trying to get me to take a pill full of glitter last night so I would pass sparkles. I opened it up and put like half of it in my gin and tonic. Today, there were no sparkles in my poo. Only corn.
