Maybe I am just paranoid, or maybe I have listened to too many paranoid people but I always do my best to avoid advertisements. As in, when an advertisement comes on TV or Youtube or any other sort of media, I actively ignore it by not watching or listening to it.
Of course I cant escape ALL adverts, but I try.

Is this weird? Am I alone on this? Am I just being paranoid?

Maybe you should take a step outside and take a deep breath dude lol

I think I will do that. A good walk to clear my head sounds good right now, at 3am, in this desolate, 3rd world community we call a native American reservation. Maybe watching the methheads wander aimlessly in the valley will clear my thoughts of this paranoid fog. It kinda sounds nice, watching the sunrise while the drug addicts drift off to find their next fix, smoking a cigarette on a high hill... Of course if I'm gonna do that Im gonna need some refreshment to tide me over......

I wonder how long it would take me to walk the 3 miles to the gas station to buy a ice-cold, frosty refreshing Coke?.....

Im a pretty strong runnner/walker (I am descended from a long line of nomads) so I think I could do it in 45mins maybe. I am also a pretty unassuming and docile looking guy. Most likely someone would pick me up, and even more likely that person would b a police officer...

it would be pretty weird for people to watch every commercial and seriously consider a purchase every time, so nawwww you're pretty normal.

Are you sure thats a weird thing Josh?
I have witnessed people watching the same channel for at least an hour and see the same advert for tacos, then start to crave those tacos even thought they never tried them (admittedly this may have been due to "the munchies stage" of the evening but my case still stands on it's own legs).

Advertising is brainwashing. I hate it. It makes me sick. It's so bad. So fake. Bites me in the ass like a raticate.

Meh, the kids who get in the stranger's van probably weren't going to grow up to be president anyway.

I do the same.

Say what you want about me but the sheer amount of advertisements to which we're exposed daily is pretty disgusting and is akin to brainwashing. Granted it's a pretty pathetic and shallow form of brainwashing but I don't really have a better name for being unwillingly exposed to hundreds (distasteful) images daily with the intent of making me more susceptible to buying certain brands and products.

The only reason this isn't generally viewed as pervasive is a little word called ideology.

That's not how ads work though. It's no conspiracy theory that their aim is to make you put the brands and products in the back of your head, usually subconsciously, so that you will be more likely to buy them at the store because they'll be more recognizable.

No ad designer is thinking that you'll see the product and go 'Hey, I'm going to buy that'. Honestly that's what brings them so close to the washing of brains.
#22
but that's exactly why its normal for people to ignore the commercials. if its already instilled in your mind you're probably not going to pay attention 100% of the time that commercial is on. hence normalness.

No matter how awesome the Coors light ads are, I've tried it, and it's really crap. So while an advert might influence me to buy something shit once, I tend not to repeat the error.

I try to avoid adverts because they are annoying and 99% of the time are about things I don't care about

Car adverts are the worst. 5 minute long poetic crap, then BAM! It was for a car all along!

Yeah, I get that but is it okay if it doesn't work?

Like, do you think any better of political and religious propaganda just because most people don't buy into it? Do you find it more acceptable that the Westboro baptist church spews utter shite just because their shite is actually so stupid that hardly anyone believes it?

Of course, as I've said before adverts are a much more shallow and pathetic type of 'brainwashing' that doesn't even try to touch complex subjects like religion or politics, but just like in the examples above, it not working should not be an argument for being okay with it.

You know how many jobs are tied in with advertising, right? You're comfortable putting all those people out of work?

Not sure how you got to putting people out of work brah but I do see some good in that. I would feel comfortable with it if it was part of a much larger action to stop financialisation.

However advertisement is just one of the many problems that are tied to consumerism and capitalism, so getting rid of it specifically wouldn't really achieve much - not worth the people losing their jobs.

But again, not sure how we got to putting people out of work.

Well, if advertising isn't OK, then is it 'not OK' in the way that alcohol and tobacco are(so, not good but still legal because corporate lobbying), or is it 'not ok' like heroin(like, not good, and you'll get sexed in the butt in prison for having it)?
Because if it's the second, then people are going to lose jobs, because it's banned, and advertising will become part of the criminal underworld, and the US will begin a War on Advertising, and probably invade somewhere.

First obviously.

I mean ideally it would be treated as the second but there's no way that's happening in a capitalist society.

That's because the people who make nicotine replacement stuff want you to quit, then see the adverts and start smoking again, so that you then quit again. All of this has happened before, and all of this will happen again

It's a conspiracy!
