Can anyone give me any tips on spotting common imperfections in fake Gibson flying V's? I have found one posted online for sale at a very low price and am skeptical. The seller provided a serial but I still don't see how he is getting anything out of selling for as little as he is.

Is it against the rules for me to link said website where it is being sold?

For the purpose of this thread, its not against the rules to post links to sales listings, no.

I am by no means an expert, but the 'faded' series Gibson put out seems to sell in that price range. I'd say it's listed so low because of the electrical issues. Even then though, I saw a couple for sale in the ~800 range through a quick google search.

If you buy a $1200 guitar new, and try to sell it, a good asking price on Craigslist is gonna be around $700 if it has basic day-to-day wear. This isn't a bad price on an entry level Gibson product. Haggle anyway though.

There's nothing fake about the guitar. $650 is around what to expect for that particular model.

Piggybacking on this as I'm looking at a similar Gibson. Can the stock pickups on this handle modern metal? (It'd be plugging into an amp I'm running EMG's through and just want to make sure I'll get enough gain and a proper tone without too much tweaking.) If all else fails I'll just put in some Duncans or EMGs later.

EDIT: The tone I aim for is Bullet For My Valentine's and they use EMGs. "Modern metal" was too broad and I realize that.

EDIT AGAIN: This one in particular. http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Flying-V/Gibson-USA/Flying-V/Specs.aspx

Yes, and people still got polio and you had to crank your car up by hand and put whale oil in the lamps every night.

Things are better now.

Style is in the hands. Taste is in the hands. But tone? Tone is in the gear.
