Hi guys
I just want to know is what is the best technique of using your ears to learn songs? Because am having lessons at the moment and my teacher has told me, that the way to find what the guitarist is playing is that you find the main beat first, then use your other hand as the off beats and try replicate it on the guitar. He has also told me that am over analyzing it too much trying to find out how many downs and ups there are. So i wanted to ask how do you guys find the beat in songs and best way to apply it ?

Thanks Dan/Doommachine

Most of the time the snare and hi hat set my right hand rhythm.
"Your sound is in your hands as much as anything. It's the way you pick, and the way you hold the guitar, more than it is the amp or the guitar you use." -- Stevie Ray Vaughan

"Anybody can play. The note is only 20 percent. The attitude of the motherfucker who plays it is 80 percent." -- Miles Davis

Quick easy way to find the beat in songs:
1. Listen to Hi-hat and Snare
2. find the beats by the cymbals (on choruses and such)
