Hi guys,

Newbie acoustic player of 19 months here. Been practising hard on fingerstyle, and in a way, feel I'm getting better. My favourite song played fingerstyle is Bruce Springsteen's 'The River'. Can play this quiet fast (should I want to), but I have only mastered striking the 4th string with my thumb, then a combination of the 1st, 2nd & 3rd strings with my fingers.

My method seems to make the song sound good to me, but a friend said I need to incorporate using the 5th and 6th string with my thumb as well as the 4th string - to give a song variation and make it more interesting. Finding it hard to do this and make it work. Any advice appreciated, as I seem to have got into a bad habit of only striking the 4th string.

Slow down your tempo and just take it slow instead of trying to go at full speed. If you can play a song at half the speed perfectly then you can speed up your tempo. Be patient and keep it up man!
