So I've noticed that there are so many types of cabs and I'm not sure what to get exactly. I've got the regular Bugera 412 cab right now and it sounds pretty good but sometime in the next couple years I'd like to get a better one. For example, why is the Marshall 1960 cab so much? What should you look for in cabs?

Marshall cabs are pretty cheap used, you can get a 1960a/b for $300-$350 all day.

You might also want to look at a used Marshall MF280 these are oversized 4x12's with V30's and are <$350 most of the time.

I have a Krank Rev 4x12 I used to run with my 333 and it sounded just fine.

Hell you can get a used Mesa Recto 4x12 for $400 used.

Bugera cabs have shit speakers for the most part, the new ones have better speakers from my understanding. marshall and others have better speakers and you also pay a premium for the name, that is why buying used is the best value.

Mesa and Orange are my top pick. Marshall would be up there too.

As a general basis, speakers are more important for tone than the cab. There are a lot of other factors though that do alter tone. Wood, porting, dimensions, multi driver, etc.

Main cost of a cab comes from the speakers. 4 V30s cost more than 4 cheapo Chinese no name speakers. So that's why, for instance, an Orange PPC212 (which comes stock with V30s) costs more than a lot of cheaper 4x12s with cheap speakers. Then there's the construction and tonewood debate which isn't worth getting into. Most high end cabs are made with birch ply. Custom cabs are also a different story with tolex, wood and grill options on top of speaker options.

I got myself an empty Seismic Luke 212 (which is the same specs and an Orange PPC212) for about $140, and had Eminence V128s to put in. My cab destroys for what I need it to do. Though I would like to try some Creambacks.

The bulk of 4x12s are 30 x 30" boxes with a post in the middle. Pull the back off and there's not much difference, as long as you're buying one made of good plywood.

The main differences you'll *hear* are whatever speakers are loaded into them (my personal favorites are V30's).

The main differences in cost relate to the logos on the front, not to construction or sound.

But what if your 4x12 is solid wood instead of plywood like mine

What type of sound are you after? You play metal right? Look for something with V30s in it - Mesa Recto, Orange, Carvin Legacy, Marshall with a V like 1960AV.

Or just get something built like a brick sh*thouse like a Peavey and drop in WGS Veteran30s.

Look for unmolested Crate Blue Voodoo cabs. Some of those came with Vintage 30 speakers and are built really well. They tend to sell quite cheap just because of the badge on them.
