A world where capitalism is kept in check with socialist values would be a good one. A safety net so thr poorest don't get trodden on, and a ceiling to stop the rich from owning the 98% of thr wealth

Oh look Rossenrot disagreeing with something. Must mean that the moral thing to do is to agree with that thing.

"Socialism is a social and economic system characterised by social ownership of the means of production and co-operative management of the economy"

Holy crap, a system in which the country is owned by the people instead of big multinational corporations? That sounds fricking awesome. But I guess Rossenrot rather wants big companies to own the resources and means of production in a country.

As essentially all Marxist countries are. We agree completely here. The best of intentions and the worst of outcomes.

Given the news in the OP, I'm not convinced that in the case of venezuela, everyone had the best of intentions.

It is a very well worn path that includes the USSR under Stalin, China under Mao, Cambodia under Pol Pot, Cuba under Castro, N. Korea under Kim Jong and on and on. Marxism is consistent at least.

A question for those better informed than me:

Is there or has there ever been, in modern times, a society that has been truly socialist in nature? Down to the whole ownership-of-the-means-of-production-and-exchange thing?

Yes, very small rural communes in NorCal mostly farming cannabis. Also early Jewish kibbutz farming. It has worked on a very small scale for generations in these communities. Many of the Kibbutz have now been privatized but there are still active communal farming cooperatives that function pretty well.

Huh. So, basically small communities that are bound together with fairly well agreed upon ethical guidelines?

Yes. It seems that when everyone knows everyone in the community by first name it can work pretty well in a rural agricultural setting. Expanding this to whole cities, industry, or whole countries it seems to degenerate pretty fast.

e.g., Venezuela, where the former President's ambassador daughter probably knows a fair few powerful people by their first names

It's the only logical ending point when most or all human labor has been supplanted by machines. Marx himself even believed that socialism would blossom out of advanced capitalist societies. It's something that's just going to inevitably happen more and more when we're forced to stop marrying someone's ability to live to their ability to work. People say $15 minimum wage is going to force McDonalds and other restaurants to automate jobs. Maybe the same with retail. I say bring it. To force us into wage competition with Malaysian slaves and robots is just delaying the inevitable. If you can't afford to pay workers enough to live, what's the point? Bring on the machines and the basic income for all.

He's not wrong.

The possible alternative is government by multinationals, a logical endgame for capitalism.
