Tbh I saw that a couple of days ago and it's the reason I want recommendations. It's got me in a big horror mood.

Depends what you mean by "good horror movies."

Do you like good movies that build up a good atmosphere of terror and dread or to you prefer the current type of horror that relies on pretty much nothing but jump scares?

And of course the other type of horror, torture porn.

Horror has recently become so predictable.

But still, try Insidious. It's not that bad...

Could you give me a few horror recs that fall in to the first (good) category?

It's the reason I generally prefer reading horror...can't find any more film recently that do a good job of basing off of atmosphere rather than *silenceinthedeadofnightinhauntedhouse-creepymusicbuilds-buildsabitmore-SCARYCHORDWITHSCARYFACE*

the shining, silence of the lambs, secret window (cause depp), 1408 (cause cousack). and exorcist i guess. not seen it but apparnetly it's legit greatest horror film ever.

you could also get into 'strnge' horror. Basically anything by David Lynch. Eraserhead. Elephant Man. Lost Highway.

Wait Until Dark as well. classic audrey hepburn

there you go
it's all just coming back

I recently watched The Mist thoroughly enjoyed it and can recommend. It did have big scary monsters. That wasn't what was good about it. What was good about it was the characters and how to they react to the stressful situation. It built up to a climax where you had two factions: the people who retained their sanity, and the people who thought it was the hand of God and started making sacrifices. They were led by an insane sky pilot. This is something I can totally relate to. Finally when the insane sky pilot wanted to sacrifice a child, justice was served.
The point of all this is that it was a good movie not because of the monsters but because of the real monsters, people, people whose elevators don't go all the way to the top floor.

Texas Chain Saw Massacre (original), The Woman in Black (with D. Radcliffe), The Hills Have Eyes (original AND remake are both good). I'll post as I think of more of my favorites

Black Christmas (1974, not the pile of crap remake)

The Thing (1982)

Halloween (1978, not the Rob Zombie abomination. If you watch Black Christmas first you can see John Carpenter was influenced by it, plus he's said so himself)

Alien (1979, after that they just became action movies, not horror. Not saying "Aliens" was bad, it was great, but it wasn't horror anymore.)

The Babadook (2014) Stupid name, good movie.

The Shining (1980)

The Exorcist (1973)

The Babadook is pretty good. Best horror I've seen for a while.

Antichrist as well. Not strictly horror, and has an obviously OTT scene which may or may not be necessary, but psychologically it can be terrifying.

The Tunnel is the second best horror film ever made after It Follows so start there.

Spring and Unfriended are the 2nd and 3rd best of 2015 so I'd check them out as well.

Also any films made by Adam Wingard/Simon Barrett and Ti West. Actually any movie with Aj Bowen in it for that matter.

Also don't listen to anybody saying The Babadook, they're terrible people with bad taste in everything

Problem I have with horror films is that I have the gamer's philosophy for good horror. To summarise courtesy of an asshole gaming critic who usually makes good points nonetheless,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bkgkEhzric

And I just don't get that from films. They're almost ALWAYS a pause and then a jumpscare, and jumpscares almost universally shite and very few horror games or films do it well. I don't even want subversive or meta horror like Scream I just want something that makes me feel physically uncomfortable.
they're coming to take me away
