I tried a couple of luthiers in Bergen county area of norther new jersey. One had a bad attitude and wanted me to come in on 2 hours notice that he was available or not to come in at all . This was near Paterson. The second ,near Hackensack was much worse. He took months to do work that should have taken a couple of weeks . Ignored my instructions ,messed up some important details ,broke parts on the guitar ,held the guitar 'hostage ' for extra money and repeatedly bragged about himself and insulted me. I can't imagine someone worse.
Anyway, I need more work done but, don't want to go into Manhattan . Any suggestions ?

pretty most luthiers focus on acoustic guitars and violins and stuff. I would find various guitar repair people (not the term, but whatever). If there's a guy who specialises in electric guitar set up, repair, mod, that's someone you want to email. Custom electric guitars tend to be someone's side job.

alternative, warmoth.
will someone carry me across ten thousand miles under the silence

Which stores in Paterson and Hackensack did you try?

Also, what kind of work do you need? I'm from Bergen county.

I don mentions names . As they say the only bad publicity is no publicity and I won't help either of these guys in any way .I think one was in Fair Lawn and the other in Teaneck but, I am not certain. they were so bad it was sort of like being in a car crash. To protect your mind it blocks out the disgusting stuff. They were certainly in Bergen county though and that is where I am going to stay clear of . The guy I went to was so bad even if he offered to do my future work for free I would not let him do it.
if you know of someone that you worked with and was satisfied let me know as long as it was not one of the ones I ran into. Even if you did not have a bad experience mine were so bad I would NEVER give either another chance ..

I think I know which one it is in Teaneck. It'd help to know what kind of work you need done.

As to work needed : an older Ovation with a broken top. I contacted Ovation and they wanted too much $ to replace the piece so I want someone to cut and install a new face (sounding board). Also, I want the electronics on a Squire tele changed. it has the reverse control set up I want back to "normal" . Then an old Epiphone nylon string needs a new saddle and maybe the bridge and I am thinking of a new nut on a Custom 22 PRS. The nut is OK but has a little buzzing ,I want it perfect or close to it as its otherwise an exceptional guitar. I thinks the slots are not cut right so i want a new nut and possibly one with a different composition like a graphite infused synthetic or perhaps a brass one. Not sure but I want a clear tone with as much sustain as possible.
The big issue, i think ,is the person who does the work . i want someone with talent AND character. So far I have only been able to find people with one but not both and the last person i used had neither.
I would rather buy a new guitar than take what I have to someone I can't trust . I am willing to pay a fair price, maybe a bit more for quality work without an attitude or months of delay and bull excuses,is that too much to ask for ?
Suggestion about Luthiers who did work for you and you were satisfied with and are in north jersey and now I would settle for extreme southern NY ,like Rockland ,if the person is really good and reliableyou actually t

I think you do need to go into Manhattan. I found that the North Jersey/ Hackensack/Teaneck area luthier I tried lied over and over again about his experience and skill and did terrible work,if you can even call it work. This guy was a horror show and still claimed to be the best in NJ.
learn from my mistakes and stay away from the north jersey repair shops claiming to be actual luthiers. Go into Manhattan,it take longer to get there but,in the big picture they are SO MUCH better there than in NJ ,at least north Jersey. The person who lied to me and got my business was so bad that if he offered to do work for me for free I would so "NO". really ,he was that bad

K.LAINAD,what would an amp have to do with the guitars being in need of repair ,especially the Ovation ? You must know what they are if you are on this site and that most Ovations have no need of amplification and the one that do use an amp only use them tangentially ?

We have a town called "Rectum"

Oh, and there's "Trutjeshoek", which you could translate as "Cunt/Twat Corner"

I love how some of them just gave up on trying to be original and just went "Cock" or "Faggot"

When I was in London last year I walked past a street called "Cock Lane".....

The locals couldn't figure out why I was giggling so much

To ,I love metallica , yes we have a " Hackensack" where did you think the lyrics to the Billy Joel song come from ? Did you think he just made up the name "Hackensack" ? Its the seat of the legislature and capital of the county , Bergen, you know where Richard Nixon <the US president , lived and had his law firm. Anyway ,you will not have to avoid the unethical people who work near like the so -called luthier who ripped me off and it is great to see you have a sense of humor but, for those of us who are interested in guitars and getting them repaired there is nothing funny about a person ( certainly not a "man" ) who lies about his qualifications ,does a terrible job ,holds my instrument hostage for months, overcharges me and then continues to set out his trap for other trusting guitar players . So... I hope others have learned from my life experience. i wished I had been warned about what lurks in Bergen county . i would have paid the toll and went into Manhattan ( instead of Teaneck/Hackensack )and saved myself hundreds of dollars ,over four months of being without the guitar ,listening to threats of having the guitar kept from me and the bill inflated by $2k and some serious headaches but, hey, maybe you are right ,we have to just laugh otherwise the fact that even in the music world there are " people ",using the word loosely ,who are out there ripping us off whenever they can get away with it, will just drive us to tears or worse ,to putting our guitars away altogether.
