So I have an idea to try to stir a little life in this place and wanted to see if anyone would be interested. I know this was done ages ago and I figured that maybe it could help breathe some life into this forum.

Let us call it the "Punk and Hardcore Olympics!"

What we will do, we will all nominate many bands for some different categories and then have a series of voting polls and competitions between bands to see who is the best in each category. Each poll can go for x # of days or a week and after each round we can eliminate different bands and boil it down to who is considered the best by the community in each section.

I would happily tally votes and organize brackets for this so all I would need are people willing to help with category selection and band selection. I would obviously need help with punk as I am more of a metal/hardcore fan but I think this is something that could get us all talking again about bands, artists, and music in general.

As for category ideas I was thinking things along the lines of this:
-Best Punk Band
-Best Punk Album
-Best Pop-Punk band
-Best Pop-Punk Album
-Best (insert core type here)-core band (metalcore, deathcore, hardcore, etc)
-Best (insert core type here)-core album
-Most technical in genre
-Best guitar work
-Best bass work
-Best drum work

All of these are just ideas. Would anyone be interested in doing this and help doing some organization? Maybe we just need to figure out the best of the best to get this ball rolling. Let me know what you guys think.

Vote here. If you want to help also post and let me know along with the vote.

With punk, we need ska, post-punk, and anarcho punk definitely. For hardcore, we need hardcore punk, melodic hardcore, metallic hardcore (or metalcore. We'll have to get into specifics on that), and crust punk. Post-hardcore, emo, and screamo are debatable.

I think this would be a good start for categories:

Best Hardcore Punk Band & Album
Best Proto-punk Band & Album
Best Ska-punk Band & Album
Best Post-Punk Band & Album
Best Skate-punk Band & Album
Best Oi! Band & Album
Best Crustpunk Band & Album
Best Anarcho-punk Band & Album
Best Pop Punk Band & Album
Best Crossover Thrash Band & Album
Best Political Punk Band

Best Punk Guitarist
Best Punk Drummer
Best Punk Frontman/Vocalist
Best Punk Bassist

Worst Punk Band

Best American Punk Band
Best Canadian Punk Band
Best UK Punk Band
Best European Punk Band
Best South American Punk Band
Best Mexican Punk Band
Best Asian Punk Band
Best African Punk Band
Best Australian Punk Band
Best Oceanic Punk Band

Best Punk Scene

Those are just my ideas for a barebones set of categories. I only used broad categories otherwise there'd be thousands of categories in just the -core genres alone.

Narrow this part of the list a little. Really boil it down to the core punk styles and the 2 or 3 main sub genres. It might be difficult but we have to cut things off somewhere else it become too complex.

Best Punk Guitarist
Best Punk Drummer
Best Punk Frontman/Vocalist
Best Punk Bassist

Worst Punk Band

Great! I specifically love the worst punk band section!

Best American Punk Band

Best Australian Punk Band
Best Oceanic Punk Band

Best Punk Scene

Do we have enough bands to pick from to address all these locations? I can definitely see using US/UK/EU being done but am unsure of the rest of the world. But that is why I am asking you guys.

-hardcore punk
-melodic hardcore
-metallic hardcore (Tr00 metalcore?)
-post-hardcore
-screamo

seem good to me.

If we're including post-hardcore and screamo, then we gotta have emo in there too. Are we dividing this in a punk section and a separate hardcore section? If so I believe emo should be on the punk side and not the hardcore side

Crust punk should be in hardcore because it's a style of hardcore and metal

Anything else that can fit into the punk realm? I don't want hardcore to get too overboard.

Also should we leave deathcore out or stick it into MISC?

Let's leave deathcore and melodic death metal out as well as melodic metalcore. Bands who are a cross between melo death and metalcore (Prayer For Cleansing, Undying, Endthisday, etc.) can stay in metalcore. As far as punk goes, you can include anarcho punk and possibly new wave. Blondie was considered punk, post-punk, and new wave

Yeah, I wanted to stay away from metalcore in general hence only listing metallic hardcore. I will update the list when I get to work.

We can just put metallic hardcore as metalcore unless you really wanna be that specific and keep it to 90's and early 2000 bands

Final categories selected. Let the nominations begin.
