One must first define "music" but I argue it to be so.

If one decides it to be non-musical one must decide where the threshold is when it comes to indeterminacy, "noise-sounds" (drums are a noise instrument), composition, and rhythm or lack thereof. After a while one realises that their attempts are poor rationalisations in the face of a form of expression that they are intimidated by.

No doubt this will turn into one of those lame discussions about music where folks who frequent other areas of the forums will come in and make it lame (music is maths!!!!! music theory is a natural phenomenon and music is an extension of that, etc.) when I made this thread for the bantz.

Yup. I'm not gounna get involved. People who argue it isn't or can't be music have usually never heard of futurism and dadaism and it's not worth getting into.

It's noise. Harsh noise especially you gotta shift focus from "melodies" to "textures". From "listening" to "experiencing". You got this really alien thing here and you gotta see if you can take anything from it. It's an assault on what is considered "music", it's an assault on us as listeners, and you don't get that from much else. It's not for everyone; I see parallels to shitty avant-garde films that make no sense but like those, this can be worthwhile to some people.

That's the thing though

"Noise music is a category of music that is characterised by the expressive use of noise within a musical context."

There's not a musical context in that thing you posted. Like, you can call it noise music, but there's not the musical aspect of it.

Anyway, people should post good noise.

and bonus thing for lame live recordings, because there's not the studio version on youtube

'Hey Merzbow, how's the new record coming along?'

'It's finished. I just made mad random noises with my voice into the mic for an hour. I think it's my best yet'

i'd say yes but i think it doesn't really matter unless they're consciously trying to explore the boundaries of music and non-music

^nowadays enough ppl know about Merzbow that it's not so bad. for the average performer most of the crowd leave by the end of the first piece. Happened to Swans a lot and they were just industrial rock.

i went to a gig like that about a month or two ago - it was inside a garage and there were like 15 people present but the attendance remained practically unchanged* and everyone was really stoked on it when it was over

*save for like 5 minutes during the first piece where the sheer volume and resonance inside that garage got so brootal that a few people had to step out cuz it was becoming physically painful and probably damaging to the ears

you should have showed me those tracks when we were discussing Laibach, JSF. Their new poppy industrial rock pales to this.
