I can't find an article to confirm the likely occurrence that all the bad guys are dead.

I have a BBC news feed which states that security forces are 'in the process of tracking [the attackers] down'. Also at least 32 people killed in Yola, Nigeria today by Islamists.

This and Paris is the tip of a very big iceberg. Another 400 year Islamic jihad like the Iberian peninsula? Yippie-kai-yay!

You underestimate the nature of Islamic jihad. ISIS is the current media headliner but just one facet of a worldwide movement that aims to turn back time to the dark ages barbarism of 1000 AD and institute Sharia law. Others include Al qaeda, hezbollah, PLO, Taliban, Hamas, Muslim Brotherhood, Boko Haram, Mujahedeen, and dozens of others.

According to the Pew Research study, roughly 80% of Muslims worldwide are peaceful moderates while 20% believe that suicide bombing is sometimes justified in defending the goals and principles of Islam. These percentages vary widely based on country and demographics. In the US, approval of violence is much smaller but in France, 46% of 18-24 yr olds approve of violence. Do the math. 20% of 1.2 billion people worldwide is a big number who approve of radical violence against innocent civilians, women and children. "The end justifies the means" mentality. These are not my numbers and I am not pleased with them but my eyes are wide open. It will get much worse before it gets better.

DQ expanding to Mali confirmed.

Also, slightly relevant to the topic of this thread:

This religion seems both intriguing and horrible (based on what I've seen on this site).

Ends justifies the means mentalities are absolutely among the most dangerous of human motives (responsible for any given genocide).

The (not easily answered) question that those numbers raise is what fraction of people who approve of violence would actually commit it. In the US, less than half of 1 percent of the population is involved in the military. obviously popular support for a given war might represent 50 or 100 times that amount. If the ratio of people who would do terrorism to those express *conditional* support for violence is anything close to that , the fraction is certainly small.

That said, two different points should protect against excessive fear/pessimism:

1) These are terrorist groups. As a rule a given terror group decline exponentially over time and lasts on average 5-9 years. if they target civilians they always fail. 94% of all fail to accomplish any goals. I tend to see the groups you list as more of successive examples of this phenomenon than part of some grand swelling towards Jihad.
2) actual impact: Terrorism causes emotional and social impacts way out of proportion with the amount of people it actually kills. Mundane accidental deaths and homicides are more dangerous by an order of magnitude or two. The Paris attacks will raise the French death rate by 1/200 of 1 percent. Terrorism remains relatively rare as far as violence goes, and is in the statistical noise for yearly death tolls.
