I've been working my way round the metal genres recently mainly thrash metal, pre 80s metal and now I want to find some decent Death Metal bands to listen to. Problem is I don't know anything about death metal apart from cannibal corpse, and I might get some hate for saying this but I love the complexity and raw talent it takes to play this really aggressive genre and for me the vocalist is just fukin impairing it by throwing up on the mic. Don't get me wrong I like shriekers, yellers, growlers but sometimes it just sounds like satan's farting on the mic.

Can anyone recommend me a list of decent death metal bands you think are worth listening to? Not really into the 'core' genre so no grindcore, pornocore, deathcore bands. I like black metal too so if you know any good bm bands let me know.

Thankyo

Spawn of Possession are pretty damn good. The musicianship from all the members is amazing. They're technical (?) death metal.

Necrophagia, just listen to Necrophagia and it's game over for any other death metal band.
Baby Joel's rabbit profile picture is kinda cute. #TeamJOEL

Start off with these:

Exhorder - Slaughter In The Vatican
Sepultura - Schizophrenia, Beneath The Remains
Pestilence - Consuming Impulse
Death - Spiritual Healing
Opeth - Blackwater Park

Then move onto these:

Suffocation - Effigy of The Forgotten, Pierced From Within
At The Gates - Gardens of Grief, The Red in the Sky is Ours
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Psycroptic - The Sceptre of the Ancients
Severed Savior - Servile Insurrection
Edge of Sanity - Crimson
Obscura - Cosmogenesis
Vehemence - God Was Created
Beheaded - Perpetual Mockery
Sentenced - Capture of Fire
Intestine Baalism - An Anatomy of the Beast

Just a word about the harsh vocals; chances are, eventually you'll warm up to them. I certainly remember I wasn't the biggest fan of growling when I started my death metal journey, but over time I came to love it. Hope you enjoy the reccommendations I gave you bro

My favourite kind of Death Metal is the midpaced, atmospheric and utterly crushing sounding stuff. If H.P Lovecraft novels would have a soundtrack it would be this stuff. The swedish-based essentials are already covered so from there on:

Slugathor

Dead Congregation
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEDoGsRKGsI

Grave Miasma

Krypts

If the fast paced, either Thrashy or technical, is more to your liking

Dying Fetus

Asphyx

Hate Eternal

Decapitated

Nile

Honorable mention: Cannabis Corpse. Yes, this is a drug related CC parody band but in some ways manages to be better than the original.

Death Metal

Death Metal songs are constructed from a series of multiple riffs, thrown together in a "riff-salad" fashion. Thematically similar riffs provide nuanced repetition, while drastic, often unexpected, tempo changes create a jarring effect. Riffs are generally totally chromatic melodies meant to provide a distorting and horrifying impact, while unrelenting rhythm pummels the listener. Concepts of death, war, decay, evil, religion, torture, and other horrifying truths are amoralistically examined within the lyrics.

Starting Points:
Death - Scream Bloody Gore ~ Leprosy ~ Spiritual Healing ~ Human
Deicide - Deicide
Master - s/t ~ On the Seventh Day God Created... Master
Obituary - Slowly We Rot ~ Cause of Death
Pestilence - Consuming Impulse

The Best:
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
Deicide - Legion
Gorguts - Obscura
Incantation - Onward to Golgotha
Massacra - Enjoy the Violence
Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Demilich - Nespithe
Morpheus Descends - Ritual of Infinity
Autopsy - Severed Survival

Primary Essentials:
Demigod - Slumber of Sullen Eyes
Dismember - Like an Ever-Flowing Stream
Gorguts - Considered Dead ~ Erosion of Sanity
Immolation - Dawn of Possession ~ Here in After ~ Close to a World Below
Incantation - Diabolical Conquest
Infester - To the Depths... In Degredation
Massacra - Final Holocaust
Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick ~ Covenant
Necrophobic - The Nocturnal Silence
Suffocation - Breeding the Spawn ~ Pierced From Within

Secondary Essentials:
Atrocity - Hallucinations ~ Todessehnsucht
Carnage - Dark Recollections
Chasm, The - Deathcult for Eternity: The Triumph ~ Procession to the Infraworld
Cryptopsy - Blasphemy Made Flesh ~ None So Vile
Darkthrone - Soulside Journey
Entombed - Left Hand Path
Fleshcrawl - Descend into the Absurd ~ Impurity
God Macabre - The Winterlong
Kataklysm - Sorcery ~ Temple of Knowledge
Molested - Blod Draum ~ Stormvold
Order From Chaos - Stillbirth Machine
Sinister - Cross the Styx ~ Diabolical Summoning
Therion - Beyond Sanctorum

For black metal check out Blut Aus Nord, if you haven't yet. I never cared too much for black metal before, but after listening to them, they really opened me the gates to black metal.

I am not huge into death metal but Death is the obvious starting point, same with lich king. the new The Faceless song is really good.

Black Metal, sooo many but Midnight Odyssey is a great listen

I've listened to about 20 of these today and oh my sweet lord baby jesus it's beautiful. I'm so happy it feels like I've accumulated a year's worth of different bands to listen to. Thank you all for the suggestions so far I've really been enjoying these

in 'the best' list there should also be
massacre - from beyond

this album is (in my opinion) some kind of the perfect example for 'death metal'

hypocrisy's 'osculum obscenum' is a good one...

and.. of course..bolt thrower..
try 'for victory' or '4th crusade'... or any other of their albums

Not to sound insensitive, but Death are good and probably the most death metal sounding band that ever existed. Even if I find their music doesn't quite hold up, they're a very barebones death metal. Lich King are ass and The Faceless aren't really death metal, at least not that I've keeping up with. Maybe they are.

Not to get into a tiff about genres and what not. They help people understand the music. Lich King are thrash so you'll be getting a different set of values from it, right?

I mean you really only need Cryptopsy's None so Vile. There are few albums that hold up over time like that one does. I'm being facetious of course.

As for black metal bands? Take your pick from the recommended bands in the recommendation thread at the top of the forum. If you can find a band on there you like, chances are someone around here can find you a band that has a similar sound. Find what you like, and we can help you find more of what you like.

Nah it's fine, like I said death metal is a little out of my sphere, although I really like Lich King but thrash is probably more appropriate.

If you think Gollum was sober with his whole "Gollum/Smeagol" thing and thinking he was invisible with the ring, then you need to remove the cotton wool from your eyes.
