Hi, all,
So, after one too many gigs lugging around my massively heavy Fender '65 Twin Custom 15, I'm thinking of selling it and buying a head that I can bring to venues that have house cabs (I also have a Vox AC 15 combo amp for those that don't).

In looking around, the two options that have kind of come to the fore are the Vox Night Train NT50H-G2 and the Orange CR-120H. The Vox has good reviews, is a tube amp, and is probably more along the same lines as my combo amp, which is nice for consistency. At the same time, the reviews for the CR-120H are through-the-roof stellar, especially at that price point...but I have to admit, as I've been a tube snob for a while, I kind of balk at the solid state thing, a little bit.

My band plays indie rock with a classic rock influence and usually plays venues between 150-300 capacity (although most mic the amps, so pure volume isn't really too much a concern).

Anyone have any experience with either of these heads? Am I being too much a stickler on the tube front?

Thanks much!

Is there a reason why its narrowed down to those two? I don't know about the Crush but I thought the G2 Night Train to be pretty boring and flavorless. I would take one of the newer Peavey Valvekings or an Egnater Rebel over either without hesitation. Just my opinion.

I've been looking recently in buying a tube head and like lucky said the peavey valvekings look quite tasty. Now I've only been watching YouTube video but to me they sound better than anything I've listened to by orange. This is only my opinion so don't dump all over me if you disagree.

This link if you get for under £400 would be a great bargain.Yet again in my opinion.

The one I was tempted in was smaller but still all tube.

Almost all amps have good reviews, even really terrible ones. The CR-series isn't the worst amps out there, but you can do better.

The NT50 should be a lot gainier than your AC15. Otherwise it seems nice enough, I've only ever tried the NT15 though. Maybe look into the Orange OR15H too, it has a more raw sound that imo works well for classic rock and lower-gain stuff, whereas the Nighttrains are a lot smoother and more "polished" if you know what I mean. You can of course like that too, a lot of people do.

Also depends a lot on where you are located, what your budget is and whether used gear is an option for you.

Thanks for the input so far, folks.

Used gear is totally an option. I'm located in NYC. I'd like to spend less than $1,000. And, you're right, I suppose I don't have to restrict myself to those two heads - they were just two that jumped out at me and I had to narrow it down lest I leave myself drowning in options.

Here are a few things I found in no particular order.

It would be nice to have maybe a 2x12 cab at home to play it at home as well.

http://newyork.craigslist.org/fct/msg/5324488071.html Laney Ironheart 120
http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/msg/5346762694.html Marshall JCM2000 DSL 100 (way too much)
http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/msg/5347879025.html Marshall JCM800 2205
http://newyork.craigslist.org/que/msg/5313756693.html Egnater TOL 50
http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/msg/5320663622.html Krank Rev Jr
http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/msg/5328359906.html '67 Fender Bassman
http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/msg/5339495056.html Mesa Lonestar (awesome if you can stretch)

All of these can be talked down of course. It is a classified ad. I also see a Valveking Micro, some JCM 900s, Egnater Rebel 20, 5153 and others.

That Orange AD30 would be sweet too.

Good thing you came here cause you are drowning in options and it'd be a shame to get outta the water sorta, with a frickin' Crush, lol. No offense to Crush fans.
