Hypothetical situation for research. Please help in the discussion.

The government has decided that in order to make people more accountable for their actions online, every citizen across the world must use accountable ID's online. This means no more using UG without everyone knowing who everyone is. No more fake personas, 100% you.

No more forums or communities built solely around anonymity such as 4Chan, everyone must be identified so they can be held accountable!

How does this make you feel?
How would YOU behave differently?
Would you engage more or less online than before?
How would this affect social communication throughout society?

Do we need anonymity? Why?
Is anonymity a right? Should it be?
Is anonymity contributing to the greater good?

I'd feel what a wasted oppurtunity for people to get an ounce of freedom simply because they can't get over being trolled.

Which is how I feel now, so nothing would change for me.

Nah, I need anonymity on a forum like this that anyone can access via Google. If I had to use my real name and picture then I wouldn't be able to say anything here without worrying about prospective employers 'n shit. Anonymity gives me freedom

It would really suck. I'd have nowhere I could express an opinion without compromising my job.

I wouldn't really care. I post shit and say shit that I would say in real life, I don't care if people know who I am. Only reason I keep some things private is solely for safety reasons

You all know my name, and I've stupidly revealed the area where I live. I don't know why I did that. I don't even like telling people my name IRL.

I would behave exactly the same, cause then everyone else would be outed as well.

I've already fucked up and shared way too much of my identity online so I'm basically all in until it inevitably comes back to bite me at this point

But wouldn't everyone else alter their behaviour to save face? You'd stand out.

If you look deep enonugh, my name, face and location are all already public. I have no anonymity.

Depends if we are assuming that all past info is released, in which case what is the point in changing ways, or if it is like from now on it becomes public, in which case I still think most people wouldn't change their behaviour. There is enough racism on Facebook under real names.

You aren't anonymous now,
more registration only increases the identification of users
its how the elite will have complete control eventually

Pretty insane, in this scenario you have far more privacy in a crowd of people than you would if you were home alone on the internet.

If you are walking in Times Square amidst thousands of people, the other people don't get to see your ID just to make sure of who you are.

But the average Joe doesn't have access to those things.

In the scenario presented, EVERYONE gets to know who you are. Not just shady governmental agencies.

In all honesty I'd probably start posting a whole lot less

that or pull a Colbert and make a fake persona but with my real name, just pronounced differently

I would also miss the shit out of Ken M
