So on my journey as an amateur Metal guitarist, I've recently mastered some new Mastodon riffs. Not very challenging but really heavy and brutal. As you can imagine the tuning also reflects this.

For the most part they play in D Standard but sometimes Drop C and sometimes they'll drop the 6th string as low as A.

So in that instance which sets would compliment dropping the 6th string down to A? Currently I'm using 11-48 but the bass strings are too floppy. Could I get away with 10-52?

I also play in E Standard pretty regularly and I don't have a second electric so two guitars with different tunings isn't an option.

I have used 10-52 for drop C, and it worked fine. You should be fine with that tuning range.

The guitar has a hard tail right?

I'd go with 10-52 as well if you want to still play in standard tuning. I personally use 11-54 for drop C, but those are far from ideal for standard tuning.

It's an Explorer 24.75 scale I think...

yeah, use 10-52. I use that gauge on my SG for E standard and I used the same guitar and strings in Drop C. Just set the guitar up correctly. The E,A,D nut slots had to be widened to accept the larger gauge strings though.

agreed, use 10-52 for drop C, but I think drop A would need a heavier gauge string
