When palm muting with all down strokes the movement comes mainly from my wrist and fingers. By this I mean my wrist creates the motion and my first finger and thumb (which i hold the pick between) seem to move back an forwards slightly too, but not too much. Is this the correct kind of technique?

After checking out my own technique, it seems like I do something similar (if not the same) when playing palm muted down strokes. Is this correct technique? I think it's at least somewhat of a matter of opinion. I would say the two major areas you want to gauge when playing are efficiency and (probably above all else) comfort- you definitely want to avoid injuries!
