i tend to say the eradication of smallpox for a variety of reasons
and if we ever eradicated malaria, that would easily win

I'd say writing. Without it, passing on knowledge would be nigh on impossible.
Sat in a lab, curing diseases. They actually LET me play with chemicals!

I could go on about the implications of the words "great" and "accomplishment" and "human" and "history" but it would take to long. I'll simply say that I mean no positive connotation by the word "great", but simply imply a magnitude of effect. "accomplishment' may not even be positive in this case

1) standardized languages - as in implementing grammar systems, consistent spellings, etc.

2) printing press (and then eventually xerox, email, etc.)

finally
3) paved roads (particularly highways)
