Or even a thing at all?

There has been a quantifiable increase in the amount of SWAT raids throughout the USA in the modern era, and because police work is imperfect (and the justice system notoriously so), a commensurate increase in wrongful deaths and mistaken raids.

This Cato article thinks it's a problem.

Meanwhile, the NRA thinks it's not a bad thing.

Do you think that this "militarization" is a negative thing? Is "militarization" even the right word to use?
My God, it's full of stars!

Militarization is absolutely the right word to use and you have to look no further than all the bullshit that happened in Ferguson to see why it's fucked

Reminds me of the opening scene of Straight Outta Compton, I don't like it.

Ugh, this is a difficult one.

My initial thoughts on this matter stemmed from the thought that timely police reaction was inadequate in most life-threatening situations. Since the presence can't really be helped without attrition, one would think that increasing their effectiveness would equate to results.

Although, it hasn't.

The Wire indicates it is clearly a bad thing.

I thought about another poll option after I made it, although it kinda fits in the last option. The whole "it's a necessary response" argument can potentially be made, but I haven't done enough research whatsoever to know about that lol.

Also, increased violence begets more violence, etc

It generally depends on how they are trained. There might be problems with not viewing citizens in a protect-and-serve way at times, but I suppose that's not too unnatural when you regularly have to deal with some very bad and dangerous things.

I suppose it'll help sell otherwise unneeded assets as more times of peace approach:

I think the level of force required should be dictated by the danger to police and civilians. Tbh i dont think the US requires the level of force that they currently use

Terrible idea. Would require extra training and discipline. You'd basically have to send every cop to boot camp.

Besides, where I'm from cops don't even carry guns, so why go full ******.
#28
Militarization of police is similar to a parent giving a 6 yr old a LP and a Marshall. Now play.

lets arm institutions that are notoriously corrupt and unaccountable extensively with tools to exert significant violence/control. if there were actual impartial, transparent systems in place that review and impact the actions of the police, maybe i can see the justification. as it stands in the current landscape i just see a lot of actions of brute force that create a sense of terror/fear among certain identifiable segments of the popuation and shocking misuse towards civilian populations via swatting etc.

considering we can't even get cops to collectively not protect each other over the interests of the people in cases of clear excessive force, drunk driving, etc etc... it doesn't seem prudent to arm them like they are an invading force with virtually no true accountability.

Is a change in clothing and armament what we are considering "militarization"?

Is there a change in tactics?

Have they put in place a phonetic alphabet?

Have they switched the way they tell time?

Have they been issued battle tanks?

Have office been forced to attend military boot camp?

Have they traded in the crown vic for a Humvee?

Have they all became alcoholics?

Do they get deployment pay increases?

Has the term "sit rep" been incorporated in the nomenclature?

If none of that, they are just a bunch of your neighbors in riot gear with guns. Sounds like alot of people in my town......and i wouldn't call them militant before i would baked.
#36
^ The term usually refers to the tactics (raids primarily) and equipment.

edit: also notably, the "us v. them" mentality

If I were a cop, I definitely wouldn't consider responding to a noise complaint without a few frag grenades and an AR-15.

Well......i guess it's just a good indicator of the direction of society?

So wether right or wrong, perhaps necessary?
#40
Quote by Dreadnought
Why necessary?

How can you expect a cop to pull you over for a rolling stop without a C4?
