The German chancellor has authorised the prosecution of comedian Jan Böhmermann for reading out an offensive poem about the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Angela Merkel insisted her government’s decision did not amount to a verdict on whether the comedian was guilty or not, but should be understood as a reaffirmation of the judiciary’s independence.

“In a constitutional democracy, weighing up personal rights against freedom of the press and freedom of expression is not a matter for governments, but for public prosecutors and courts,” Merkel said in a press conference on Friday.

Those who died in the war to defend the rights of individuals should be turning in their grave. A new kind of authoritarian power is rising in Europe, iconified by spineless Merkel and her appeasement of the East.

the positive thing that could come out of it is if merkel knows it'll be a landslide defence and no way the comedian gets done in for anything, then she can scrap that bollocks law so erdogan can't say merkel is biased and then back out of refugee deals, etc, and life can move on

maybe that'll happen, idk. i don't know politics stuff very well, and i did kinda raise my eyebrows when i saw this.
it's all just coming back

Not that it should matter, but I wonder what the poem said. I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Under an obscure paragraph of Germany’s criminal code, prosecution for insults against organs or representatives of foreign states requires both a notification from the offended party and an authorisation from the government.

Merkel said on Friday that she considered the law “unnecessary”, and that legal steps would be taken towards deleting it from the penal code within the next two years.

Meanwhile the poem matey will get a two year prison sentence and then afterwards Merkel will say "sorry about that, old chum. The law has now been removed and we admit that you did nothing wrong."

Stupid Germany nobody likes you
I have nothing important to say

Germany is definitely feeling it's oats. It's dominating the EU thoroughly. The UK and France should be trying to address the balance of power but seem resigned to second fiddle status.

3. a department or organization that performs a specified function.
"the organs of local government"

4. a newspaper or periodical which promotes the views of a political party or movement.
"he repositioned the journal as a leading organ of neoconservatism"

This is weird that she agrees the law should be removed but is fine with prosecuting someone regardless. Also you're not allowed to protest this either.
A demonstration in front of the Turkish embassy in Berlin, scheduled for Friday afternoon, has been banned by Berlin police.*

Oh look, Adolfela Merkler is at it again. Who else do I recall banning speech and symbols that contradicted the values of the state...hmmmm

This may the the dumbest thing I've read in my entire life.

What she agreed to was that there will be a trial to determine what happens next. This is because jurisdiction is NOT the job of the government - If it were, you'd have a country where the government is above the law. Does THAT sound familiar to you now?

If anything, what she did was democratic.

Jesus Christ why is everyone acting like the guy has been sentenced already? Newsflash: he's not and probably will not.

Also, Böhmermann is not funny. And Erdogan's a knob.

It was a joke, but I am becoming increasingly skeptical of the benefits of democracy and the like. Redistribute the wealth, give people some reasonable freedoms and be done with it.

I work for a German company and have quite a few regular Joe contact over there. If you guys want to throw together a list of questions I can ask a few of my buddies, I would be happy to get a poll from some of the citizens there on the state of their government.

Doesn't Germany have a bunch of EU debt owed to them? Why aren't they wrecking Europe right now?

Are you being sarcastic in the OP? I can't tell with you anymore.

Merkel shouldn't be able to block civil prosecution. Her statement essentially amounts to "It's in the hands of the courts, not me".
