Hi Guys !
I would like to update my guitar (dean razorback lightning)
and I thought it would be a good idea to start from the pickups.
It features a basswood body and a floyd rose special.
I didn't give choice in the voting section for emgs regular
because I want a really HIGH output pickup but with an
organic sound as well.

You need to give us a budget, the genre of music you play, kinds of sounds you like and your location if you want a proper answer to your question.

It would also be less confusing if you called your thread "Dean Razorback Upgrade" or "New Pickups for my Razorback".

Sorry for the thread name 😇
As mentioned above I play melodic death metal and want a high output pickup with organic sound with a big amount of tremble and balanced bass (I don't really care for mids). As for the budget I am going to spent until
350$ (my local shop offers all pickups mentioned for similar prices as for the location).
#4
What amp are you using?
Gibson LP traditional and DC standard, SG standard, MIA Standard Strat, Schecter Banshee 7(*for sale*)
EVH 5153, Orange TV50H 2-2x12's
Line 6 M13
#5
I am using the Fender Mustang I (V.2.)
I regularly use the metal channel for gigs and practices
#6
I think a lot of the benefit of upgrading your pickups may not shine through on that amp. You will definitely be able to tell a difference, but really the amp is thing you want to focus on updating if you want to improve your sound by the greatest measure.

So what you guys recomend me ?
I was thinking of something to randall rg1503 maybe ?
Will it fit the music style I am in ?
My budget for amp is around 500$
#9
Are you willing to go used? Also, any particular bands you like? These days MeloDeath is a HUGE genre. Off the top of my head I'd recommend a used 6505+ combo, but that is kind of the default for heavy tunes in that price range.
I'm just a kickin' and a gougin' in the mud and the blood and the beer.
#10
I would buy a used amp if it was a reasonable offer.
Now for the tunings I use, they vary from E Standard to Drop A.
Amon Amarth (ex.The Hero) and Enshine (ex.Dual Existence) have a nice tone in my opinion ,close at least to what I look forward to, but I find it a little bit more bassy than what I actually want.

Not certain on Enshine's gear, but Amon Amarth uses the 6505. I wouldn't worry too much with bass, that is most likely more in the production and the bass guitar than anything.

The 6505/+ will handle tunings across the board pretty well. You ought to be able to find a used 6505+ combo in your budget, and quite possibly a 6505 combo (its a 212 vs. the + being a 112, and older 6505 combos will be made in America, which generally alludes to a higher build quality).

Normally I shy away from automatically jumping to that recommendation, but in this situation it really makes sense.
I'm just a kickin' and a gougin' in the mud and the blood and the beer.

Thanks a lot, I will surely give it a try.😉

I'd actually consider Amon Amarth and Dimmu Borgir...and the new Cradle of Filth as probably the best produced and sounding bands in the genre. They all now have mids in their sound

Agreed, not crazy about the latter two but their newest stuff (in addition to Amon Amarth) sounds fantastic.

Unfortunately my local shop doesn't offer deathbucker or how it's called.
It actually can bring only the 3 in the voting section
(+ the regular emgs).
#19
As for the mids what I mean is that I don't have any problem with them either being 10/10 or 0/10
;-)

#21
I am worried that they won't have as high output as I want because they are not actives.
I was also considering getting a dimebucker (I've been told that it has a great output)

no.

actives don't necessarily have more gain than passives. actives are actually weaker pickups with an attached preamp (thats what the battery does).

dimebuckers are TERRIBLE. i had an old dime guitar with one. i hated it. all treble no mids no bass. just shit.

i personally do like EMG's for some things, i have an SG with dual 81's that is a blast to play and sounds great, once in a while.

you probably don't need nor want more gain than EMG's. if you are hitting the amp with a boost you don't need as much as you think.

you may want to look into dimarzio d-activators. they are passive and have a very heavy voicing.

So passives would be better soultion...
hm...I wouldn't buy something before trying it ( or at least try something similar to it )
and that's the problem with the dimarzios.
On the other hand why lose something that may be good this way ?
Do you know any different-brand-pickup that sound like the dimarzios?
*I can order dimarzios although (I just don't have the chance to try them)
Also what about the Black Winters my l.s. offers ?

Not necessarily a 'better' solution either way is viable.

check out youtube demos, the more you see the more you find the common trends in the videos and kind of average them out.

sometimes you have to buy blind.

Dimarzio will replace pickups if you don't like, no questions asked. I think SD does that as well.

So I wouldn't miss something by going into SDs instand of dimarzio.

(nothing wrong with dim. just can't try them)
Now as for the SDs which are good for the sound I want ?
A friend suggested me invaders ,or so, but I found them to bassy ?
Can this be adjusted ?

most pickups (even SD's) if you go to a store, you will find four different pickups most likely on different guitars. for SD, you will find a JB, a Jazz, a '59, maybe a custum and maybe a duncan distortion. maybe an invader.

do what you will i guess...

That's a good question !
I thought it would have been easier to decided pickups !

On the other side custom shop is supposed to create a pickup
perfect for you based on your description.

Just my guess though ...

The black winters are awesome, as are the other new "metal" pickups from SD. I'm not terribly familiar with SD, so I'll recommend what I know: look into Dimarzio Dactivators, the Crunch Lab Liquifire set (my favorite).

There are others but from what you described I'm guessing you want a tight, high output sound. Both sets will do that, but differently. I've had both, and for straightforward metal I found the Dactivators were a bit better, but the CL/LF are soooo sweet for leads.
I'm just a kickin' and a gougin' in the mud and the blood and the beer.

Hold on, we're talking custom SD with a Mustang amp?

Buy a better amp with the money you're looking to spend on pickups.

If you really want to spend money on pickups then just drop off the shelf SDs in. Look at Distortions, Black Winters, and Nazgul/Sentient.
Guitars:
Ibanez RG1570 Prestige
Jackson Kelly KE3 - MIJ (Distortion/Jazz)
Jackson DKMGT Dinky (EMG 81/85)
ESP E-II Eclipse Custom (JB/'59)
ESP LTD EC-1001FR (EMG 81/60)
Fender MIM Strat

Amps:
Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier Roadster 212
Laney IronHeart IRT-Studio
Peavey Vypyr 30
Peavey ReValver Amp Sims
TOOOO many T.C. Electronic Pedals. . .

From what you said I'll try to find Black Winters and Dactivators to test them and see what suits me the most 😉
Also, I should consider purchasing a 6505

where are you going to test them? i don't think you realize that they are not OEM on any common guitars. a store is not going to throw the pickups you want in a guitar so you can demo them. i think you are missing something pretty big here.

either get a pair or SD's or dimarzios, both brands have a policy where you can send the ones you have back once, and they will send you a different pair. thats as good as you are going to get.

i think you should be doing some research on WHAT you even want as far as tone goes, you have been bouncing around everywhere. you have no idea what you need or want at this point.
