Is it cooler to be a jaded pessimist than a happy-go-lucky optimist these days? Which one are you? Are there benefits to being optimistic VS pessimistic?

Optimist. If I genuinely held a pessimistic worldview, I'd kill myself. Couldn't function if I couldn't believe that things would end up alright.

I'm actually overall optimistic of the future and I often find that is in conflict with the popular view.

this is actually kind of a sore issue for me. as someone who has a history of depression trying to maintain an optimistic outlook can be a challenge, as any sort of pessimistic thought can cause things to spiral out of control. i think it's better to be optimistic whilst also being a realistic about things because there is nothing worse than pollyanna optimism

This is particularly amusing in that the article snippet he posted and is likely taking this from says a very different thing than you've postulated.

Also, note the revision. It doesn't really say the exact opposite, and it does blame liberals, but from a liberal standpoint, that of not trumpeting their alleged accomplishments.

Yah to an extent, because people protect their own egos with pessimism. Being pessimistic generally allows one to act as if they have some special knowledge about the future as well, unlike the fool-hardy optimists who foolishly believe things will be getting better etc.

But in reality pessimism affords no real benefits beyond avoiding a short term failure, and in doing so stops people from accomplishing many things.

I don't know that people are more or less pessimistic than in the past. I think we have technology which allows us to more readily entrench ourselves in a particular perspective, which we substitute for overall societal attitudes.

While I'm not very outwardly optimistic and enjoy coming across as a miserable bastard, my general motivation in life is "it's fine, i'tll be fine", which I guess leans more towards optimism?

I think I lean more towards being positive, but I also try to keep a balance. I like staying in the middle between the two if I can.

I'm more pessimistic than optimistic.

Pessimism helps ease the burden of expectation, so that I won't be so angry or disappointed when things don't go well, and that way I end up being more grateful when things don't end catastrophically. But too much of that can be self-fulfilling.

Why? Being optimistic doesn't mean being naïve or unrealistic.

I don't really have an answer. I would say I'm more optimistic as I get older. I guess I consider optimism as looking on the bright side of things more than not doing so, but sometimes positive elements need to be focused on, in my opinion. Bad feelings and expectations have value too, and we can learn from them as much as good ones.
