Im a noob when it comes to street performances. I waste 80% of my time looking for musicians over the internet and nothing ever comes out of that. People will always flake out on you or for whatever reason don't follow through with their intentions. I want to start hitting the streets and jamming out in public. Just get people at least paying attention. Then maybe I would have a chance at actually putting a band together. Im not going into this expecting to earn money or anything. I hate money and I need just enough to buy strings or replace drum heads. My hatred for money gives me the freedom to be a full time musician. Give me a million dollars and id give half of it away. All I ever really cared about was playing.

Now see, money buys you good gear that is actually nice to use

Also if band members are what you want go to an open mic

Do you just want the tips or can we go all in?

I want the tips lol. Not tips as in money tips for a guitar performance. Tips as in..... Where should I set up my gear? Do I bring a nice guitar or a beater like a Gio? If I dropped my Gio and snapped the neck I wouldn't lose sleep but I have nicer guitars I could take with me. Is making noise in public places going to bother people and cause problems? There are no open mic nights in my town but I know people play. Those kind of tips.

If you wanna go all in and let me know that my outlook on life is wrong please do. All I care about is playing and I really mean that. I want a band to actively play shows with and make albums with. Whenever I bring this up people tell me im crazy and it's a pipedream. I say bullshit. Theres plenty of guys out there doing what I want to do. So I think nine times out of ten people just don't want to work for it. I always say working in a factory is just as hard as being a musician. Both jobs are hard work. You can either work for yourself or work for somebody else. Thats how I see things. But if im wrong, go all in and say get a job kid you just don't have it. That isn't going to stop me at all from working my way to the top.

I've got a pretty big tip for you.

Sorry, I was just making immature penis jokes

I have no experience as a busker at all, but my two cents:
- Location is obviously crucial. Go somewhere with a lot of people, preferably where those people are mainly out to have a good time/nice day. Busy shopping streets, boardwalks, city squares etc.
- Be good at what you do. I think this goes without saying, but just make sure what you do, you do well. People have to be able to enjoy it.
- Be willing to entertain. Being proud of your art is great, but if the purpose is to entertain and get people to notice it, you have to listen to the people. Try out different stuff and see what people respond to. This will also vary per location of course.
- If at all possible, try to do something relatively "unique" or special. People tend to like seeing new stuff done well. But don't push it too far and sacrifice proper execution for the sake of random experiments.

Aside from all that, I think it's just a matter of play and learn. You'll have lesser days, you'll have better days. Try to find the patterns in people's responses.

It's also good for things like "food" and "rent" etc.

But seriously, location and choice of music. In my town there are quite a few buskers out on saturday night, don't know if they make more money when people are drunk but I guess so. Another assumption of mine is that the top 10 radio hits of the month probably give you more appreciation than a rendition of "Shine on you crazy diamond".

This is true,

Sadly, a busker doing some shit rendition of "Love Yourself" will get more money (and girls phone numbers) than a busker doing "Drifting" by Andy McKee

Just take your axe out onto a busy street somewhere with lots of people walking by and put your open case out in front. I was staying at a casino one time in Albuquerque and I was just practicing outside in the beautiful weather. I was about 100 yards from the hotel. I wasn't intending to perform for anyone and assumed I was in a fairly private spot. Anyway I was picking away when I heard a "tedump-dump'....and saw a couple quarters in my soft case. I looked up and an old guy smiled at me. I thanked him and he walked on by.

That makes me a pro

Forgot to say that if you want to make some money and really entertain, an odd/funny instrument is a good way to go. I've seen guys playing buckets rake in in a day more cash that more traditional guitar+vocals buskers do in a month.

^ very true, I made $20 in 5 minutes playing the accordion when I was 14

Lol you guys and girls on the pit forums are a funny bunch. I didn't really understand his penis joke until he spelled it out for me. Damn this thread got x rated real quick. I will say this though... if I had a woman wearing that kind of shirt with fishnets do vocals for me a lot of thirsty guitar players would come Thanks for the laugh people. I could never expect to fuck with any musician online at this point in my life. At least people online can make me laugh if nothing else.

We ventured off topic a little bit but since I have you im curious. Is it easier for other people to find players by posting ads or is the internet just a bad place to look? It's really not easy meeting people. As a busker im not going to cover any songs. Let's give them the whole 9 yards. I will record drum and bass tracks and burn them to a cd. Bring my axe with me and give free rock concerts on the street. Why the fuck not? Nobody else is even motivated to do it in my area.

I know you think it's inconsequential, but MONEY
If you are set on doing this, you need money to survive and giving shit away for free is a really good way to both fail making money and gain a reputation as a walkover.

And I guarantee you people will tell you to fuck off before spending a couple minutes at the guy playing Ed Sheeran outside WH Smiths.

How many fans do you hope to gain by busking? 97/100 people will walk right past you, and one of the other three will leave change in your guitar case. Person 99 is the business owner nearby telling you to fuck off. The 100th person will be the police officer who tells you that you're taking up too much space.

Hates Money.

Would keep $500,000.00
