Hi guys.
I have decided to treat myself with a new RG instead of my old RG370DX. I have three options in mind and I could use some feedback to help me make up my mind:

1. New Ibanez RG3550ZDX Prestige for $1400. The problem with this one is I would have to order it online, without testing it. There is a return policy I guess, but still it's a hassle.
http://ibanez.wikia.com/wiki/RG3550ZDX

2. New Ibanez RG1XXV Premium for $1100. There is one in a shop here, I still haven't found time to check it out.
http://ibanez.wikia.com/wiki/RG1XXV

3. Used Ibanez '93 RG770DX for $720. Seller says it is in great condition. I saw the photos and it looks ok, couple of smaller dents and scratches, but I don't see the state of the fretboard. These models are supposed to have resale value.
http://ibanez.wikia.com/wiki/RG770DX

Now the problem with first two are that I would buy them abroad because I work outside my country and would have to bring them home on a plane. Second thing is maybe there would be import charges. All three come with case.

Out of the three the 3550 is definitely the highest quality but that doesn't mean the others aren't good instruments. Given how similar these all are, I'd say it comes down to what you are willing to spend. If it were me I'd probably grab the 770 and spend some of the savings getting a pickups I liked.
I'm just a kickin' and a gougin' in the mud and the blood and the beer.

i wouldn't get a premium. very mediocre.

i have a 3500mz, a 2550evsl, a 2570gbk, and a 1570s. they are all great, and i paid from $380 to $640 each. i will be getting another one some day. the 15__ series is a step down from the other three IMO, but the 25__ are just as nice as the 35__'s. however the 25__'s need new pickups.

How did you get such a good price? Used models?

This is the fretboard of the used RG770, what do you think?

luck and patience, and used. reverb (dot com) is a good place to look. that is where I buy most of my stuff.

That fretboard is worn and dirty to say the least. what condition are the frets in?

The seller just sent me the pic I haven't seen it in person, you can see a hi res photo if you click on it. Based only on the pic it doesn't look that good.

Yeah, I think I would dodge that one, unless you want to do work on it and can get it really cheap.

I would search around the net for a prestige

Id haggle the price a bit. The rg770dx is a prestige level instrument. Made by the same people in the same place with the same level of detail. I would offer 500 given its dirty condition, but to say a 3550 is a "better" guitar is a bit of a stretch imo. It will certainly be cleaner, and has a different neck, so you may very well prefer that one...

Remember the rg770dxs were assembled in the USA. They were setup better and had extra quality control steps added to them as well.

I agree with you. But it's the state of the fretboard is what worries me, since I don't know a good luthier who could repair it. I'll get around to check it in a couple of weeks.

On the other hand RG3550 is on sale now for $1050.
3 problems remain with it: I have to order it online, I have to take it with me on a plane to my home country, and evade the import tax somehow

I'll post here if and when I make some progress.

I have an s5470, rg3570z, rg2570, rg2550e, rg1570, rg1527 and rga121, all used for around that same price range. And I notice zero quality differences between the higher models over the 1570. You get fancier inlays and better pickups, sure. Out of those, the 1570 is my best playing Ibanez. And yeah, the v7/v8 pups were replaced quite quickly

Is there something wrong with the 770? Just looks dirty on my end? If you can haggle the price you should very much get that one ( unless something is super wrong with it of course)

I've been looking for a nice 770 for a long time. They are either over priced or in terrible shape... Or black... I hate the black ones.

I will admit I am extremely biased to square heel ibbies over aanj ones. They do have a different feel, so take that into consideration.

Not sure but the frets look a bit worn out on the photo.
For $300 more I can get a new RG3550, so that is my guideline.
LoPro vs Edge Zero should be a tie, but what do you think about the pickups? 770 has DiMarzio USA F4, C3, F2. I have to admit I'm lost here.
Good point on the neck joint though, I haven't played on square ones.

interesting, my 2570 is my best playing all around. my 1570 is still a great guitar, but it is easier the least favorite of my quad.

hell of a nice collection there.

Thanks!

Not sure why, but it just has the mojo. And if strings are anything less than 8-10 months old, it never goes out of tune. Even when I do stupid things with the trem. I've actually started out buying different brands at least. Now have a jp6, axis, peavey usa wolfgang archtop, evh wolf special HT and an eclipse. Plus a pre-prestige s540ltd

Oh and the now retired HM Strat

Must stop looking at reverb and kijiji!

Out of those, get the RG3550Z.

Outside of those, you could find an RG2550Z (2015 model) for less than that. If you find one somewhere, it will probably be brand new as well. Also, it's basically the same guitar. The RG655 is similar, but with a thinner neck than the RG2550Z and a different trem. Same pickups for all.

Repair it? It just looks a little dirty....or it's just a shitty picture. I don't see any damage there. Some fretboard conditioner will make it look like new. I'd maybe ask for more pics.

I took your advice guys and looked around and I've bought an RG2570E:

$650 with Boss Chorus, Compressor and Metal Zone (I know, I know... but still...)
Gonna need some cleaning and a setup. What do you think?

I'll have to put the Classic T models on my to-try list. Shame the finish options there are Anachronism Gold, Nuclear Waste and Aged Clown, because in principle the plaintop is right up my alley.
