The 6th song I started writing and the 5th song I've recorded. I'm not entirely sure if the blast beats are appropriate for the song so let me know what you think about those. Critique on anything else you can think of is very helpful too. Guitar tone, bass tone/volume, good/bad riffs, song structure, drum sounds, etc?

Very nice! I thought the drumming/blast beats sounded just fine with everything; it actually blended together nicely and I didn't hear anything in the drumming that sounded out of place with the song structure. I thought the tones sounded good and pretty balanced, I only had a few areas in which ideas came to mind for you to explore:

That minor key riff at 1:50: Sounded great, but I would have liked to have heard it a little better. Maybe consider brightening the EQ on that riff if you can, or just bump up the volume a tad. I'm leaning toward EQ though. To my ears, it just needed to poke through the mix a little better.

At 3:15 there was something happening in the low-end, either bass guitar or just lower guitar chords -- I couldn't quite tell what that was. It sounded like you were onto something, but I couldn't quite hear your idea well enough. I'd consider raising the volume of that or EQ so that it pokes through the mix a little better.

Hopefully that helps! I'd like to hear more of your material. Here's a link to my latest song (in basically the same genre -- black metal) if you wouldn't mind giving me a review:

Little too much actual gain on the guitars for my taste, and I think the drums need a hair less verb on them! other than that it's fantastic dude. I think you could use a touch less echo/delay too, it's getting a little lost in the mix as I'm listening. I'd fatten up the kick some with like 70hz and turn down the guitars overall just a little.

other than that, great songwriting, and good mix dude!!!

when you get the chance take a listen to my song!!!
thanks

@LeeAlacoque: Hey, this track is great. I definitely enjoyed this, it reminds me of Skogen (you should check them out if you aren't familiar). Looking at the comments above, I think the gain is about right for black metal but it wouldn't hurt to see what reducing it will do. Is that a 7-string at ~3:15? It's nice to hear some 7-string in black metal, once in a while. I really like the chord progression/melody starting at about 4:20, I think you could expand upon that, put some blast beats in to make it more of a climax and a few more tremolo picked leads to finish it off. Furthermore, you could superimpose the low notes used in the previous idea to improve the "finality" to the piece. Liked and following.

I was wondering, would you also be able to give my piece a review (link below). Not as much black metal in this one as usual, it's more on the thrash side but I am a big fan of black metal and those influences are always present. If you want to work on some stuff together, I'm up for it. Although maybe later in the year when I'm not so busy with studies.

Nice! I like the songwriting here, the guitars sound nice and tight, a bit loud but I don't think it's bad, it makes the song sound fuller in general, maybe a bit less gain would help with clarity, also good playing!

I hear no bad riffs here, my fav part are the riff starting at 2:33 and the one at 3:12, pretty good riff writing.

Maybe I would make the drums a bit different/bigger for this style but that's just personal preference and for how the way they sound it already sounds awesome! Good job!

That section is a single guitar part where I'm picking out the notes of a chord and letting them ring. The low end sound is the low E and B strings ringing out, with the bass guitar following the E and B on the guitar like E E, B B, E E, B B,...

I checked out Skogen and liked it so I'll be getting some of their stuff later. Thanks for that!

Yes, that's the low B on my 7 string in that riff. I've been trying to incorporate it more in my songs but I find it really difficult to use without it sounding out of place.

I'd be down to do some stuff with you. I'm also a fan of thrash and the more technical prog stuff so it would be cool to give that a try.

Awesome, glad you liked them. My favourite album is Eld but I enjoyed the latest one too.

Sounds good, although I will send you PM about some details as discussing it in this thread would be involve some serious derailing.

Lee,
I agree there is too much gain/distortion on the guitars, but I'm sensitive to that, otherwise it is pretty good overall. I would probably get fatigued after awhile by the blast beats (I'm not normally a huge fan of blast beats anyway though), though the drums are mostly dominated by the loud guitars, so the drums are less obvious. Please review my music at this link (you'll probably prefer the second song):

This song is awesome dude. Love the layering and the production in general, it perfectly captures the rawness of black metal while still sounding crisp and clear. I didn't really have a problem with the gain on the guitars, I thought it was about right for this style. All around fantastic work!
