Let's get a list going of forward thinking pedals that don't fall into the obvious categories - such as flangers, chorus, tremolo, delay, fuzz, overdrives etc.

For example, the Malekko Sneak Attack, which allows for lightning fast auto volume swells - or the electro harmonix freeze.

I'm looking to break some new ground from a soundscape standpoint and would like to see if anyone has some good recommendations.

There's that newish (about a year old) synth pedal from Boss. It takes a 1/4" in so it doesn't need any special MIDI pickup so it can be used with instruments like 8 string guitars where MIDI pickups are harder to come by. Of course there are other 1/4" in synth pedals, but this one is fully polyphonic and goes beyond what any other has really done.

It's definitely a friendly way to get guitarists into the world of synthesis, but it does seem to have a few downsides, such as relying on your guitar's output for the amplitude envelope, which would prevent you from sustaining notes indefinitely the way you could on a keyboard. It also doesn't help that pretty much all the demo videos and presets feature mainly hard synth leads that are vaguely guitar-like. I wouldn't put down the money for one, but if they release. A second generation followup in the next year or two, it could really be something cool.

Other than that, Earthquaker Devices has an arpeggiator pedal which is kind of neat. It could be very interesting to see more stuff like that in the future, especially having a fully programmable sequencer/polyphonic arpeggiator that includes.

Though I guess as a keyboard player, these things are only minimally exciting since they are already available in keyboard form, but far more refined than things for guitar and, while guitar effect manufacturers are certainly trying to push further into synth territory, they're style a ways behind what keyboards can do.
There's no such thing; there never was. Where I am going you cannot follow me now.

Only one classical- a nice little Yamaha- plus 3 A/E guitars & 1 A/E fretless bass. Everything else is electric.

If I ever get serious cash for frivolities, I may invest in a high-end acoustic or A/E.

I thought they should have used trackballs instead. With a cross to show the zero/center point. Might be easier to manipulate with a foot.

I think the joysticks are more fun, especially when you're screwing around with a loop, also especially bending down while old (a trackball could be lethal for some, lol). As normal controls, you get used to it quickly and it's cool that it covers 2 controls, the tremolo is insanely fun for crazy noise manipulation.

It occurred to me that virtually everything on these pedals so far is available on one or two of the nine sound engines on my Korg Kronos. My wallet was beginning to jump out of my pocket there for a bit, but a few minutes of dinkwithage on the keyboard has calmed things down. I can breathe again. Phew.

Did anyone mention the DOD Gonkulator? That was way ahead of its time. The Korg Kaoss Pad although not a pedal can do some really cool and weird stuff when you run a guitar input through it.

I first saw one on...G3? And yes, the guy doing the demo noted that it wasn't designed for guitar...and then demoed it with a guitar.

Considering that there are now guitars with similar devices, that definitely puts the KP in "ground-breaking" territory.
