"Shh!!" is the vocal expression used in English dialects to express a will to silence the current state of outward expressions. Does this same sound carry on the same meaning in other languages? If not what other vocal expressions are used in other languages (that you're aware of) to demand silence?

Staring them in the eye and putting a finger to the lip is universal, I think.

I can't remember exactly, but I think that sound is one of the loudest human beings can make without actually vocalizing

I remembered seeing or hearing somewhere that a lot of onomatopoeias are the same or similar in many cultures and a google search pulled up that page

And I believe bladeslinger is partially right. All the ones on that page look like they are sibilant sounds - high frequency hissing sounds - while other sounds we can make have more mid to low frequencies so the sound would carry more. So we can make the sound as loud or soft as we want depending on the situation, and there's less chance of it being heard.

Idk what this is from but the first script is from Marathi and the second one is from Hindi and they are both ways of telling people to be quiet in those languages.

In Tamil you can say "sho" or "ush" to silence someone, or "ngap" to describe someone who has been silenced (usually out of awe or fear)

Little known fact is that "shh" comes from "shut the fuck up". It was shortened in 1850's to save space on library walls.
