better strings gauges to go back and forth on acoustic guitar from open D and standard E?

Open D is not that far from standard that you desperately need heavier strings so just use the same 12 or 13 set of strings you would use for standard. Still, it's not particularly great to be going back and forth between tunings like that.

I played nearly all slide in open tunings, and the book that got me started was "Country Blues Bottleneck Guitar" by Ferguson and Gellis, published by Walter Kane. You should still be able to find copies on Amazon. I would also look at Homespun instructional material, they're sure to have something, and they classify by degree of difficulty.
