Like the title suggests. It doesn't have to be powerful vocals or incredibly clean vocals, it can be little moments like the evil laughing bits on Bethlehem's Wintermute or Morbid's From the Dark HAHAHA I AM DARK bit.
#2
Oh boy, I got a lot of these.

Virgin Steele - Blood And Gasoline

After the guitar solo "Faster and faster..." always gets me 'cause of the power and conviction in his voice. It and the chorus really evoke an image of what's happening in the song.

Grand Belial's Key - The Sleeping Princess Of The Arges

After the last of the female vocals when the male vocals come back. Holy shit, that ending "death has embraced me again we are OOOOONE" damn! That ending scream into the melodic guitar solo fills me with so much power it's unreal.

Wicked Innocence - A Level Higher

The beginning of this track with the clean vocals...my god if there's anything in metal that makes me feel like I'm beginning a journey into a lovecraftian nightmare it's this intro. The odd sophistication in his voice a long with that haunting tone is so strangely cosmic, I love it.

Limbonic Art - Beneath The Burial Surface

After the music is done and the thunder and bells begin. The eerie whispering that slowly builds into a creaky, witch-like tone in front of the background of ambient music sends chills down my spine every time.

Crimson Glory - Dragon Lady

I adore the chorus for this song, however cheesy it may be. What always gets me is that building scream he does before the solo. AHH AHHHH AHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH It's so corny, but goddamn it and that ending bit "THE DRAGON LADY WANTS TO MEET YOUUU" wonderful 80's cheese.

Caladan Brood - Book Of The Fallen

At the very end of the song where it's only vocals. This is probably the most epic vocal line in a metal song I've ever heard. The mix of the melody, harmony and lyrics paints a truly romantic scene of war and loss that stands above most of the genre.

Skagos - Anarchic I-IV

At 26:30 in this video the vocals get a strange, desperate tone to them. The lyrics of impending doom and mythical apocalypse is portrayed so well with these odd, reverberating and cracking vocals. It's like the Limbonic Art song, but instead of a strong sense of fear it's sorrow and hopelessness.

Scythian - War Graves(Dulce Et Decorum Est...)

Wilfred Owen's poem that's read for the entire song with these strong, almost Sean Connery-esque vocals sets such a somber mood that turns into a firey recounting of the horrors of war.

Mercyful Fate - The Oath

This is kinda just silly, but the "OOO OOO OOOOOOO AAA AAA AAAAA" part around halfway in the song always makes me smile.

I have more, but I figured that'll be enough for now.

I like when singers that speak languages without dental fricatives sing in English and can't produce dental fricatives correctly. According to Vratyas Vakyas, upon a viking's deas he will meet Osinn, ze fazzer of Sor.

Opened up a can of worms... definitely not gonna link everything. You are big boys, go find it yourself.

Blind Guardian (just to name a few! Hail Hansi!)

LOST IN THE TWILIGHT HALL
I see planets dying
I fall into the light
A new universe awakes
I'm a Traveler in Time
PRAY FOR THE LIGHT
Where's the key
To the gate
Of a new life - no
I search for deliverance
But I cannot find

Shouldn't have to describe how great this one is. So powerful, evocative and emotional. It hits me every time over all these years and remains a near untouchable moment of greatness in vocal duos.

And the mirror will burst!

After hitting you with
That's when the mirrors... falling down
quite a few times with a certain cadence, this one comes with so much power. The delivery makes it for what it is, a launching pad to Power Metal ecstasy. An exhibition in how a note that quickly ends can be so much more powerful than a sustained one. Man... where would I be without Blind Guardian? Truly a torch bearer since the beginning of days. Hail.

MAJESTY
OOOOOOOOOOooooh MAJESTY

And you will leave us behind
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAoooOOOO MAJESTY
Your kingdom is lost

Mirium Occultum...
You, who called me by my six names, NAMES!
You know not what powers you toy with.
I am DAMNED, I am FALLEN
I spat blasphemies at the face of the creator,
and I have left the curse that is the flesh.

I am the star that hangs from the heavens,
Inverted to the form of a gate.
An alternate path to the twilight of KETHER
I have shed my cloak of shame!

The whispering of the Mirium Occultum that leads into the opened infernal gate of magick that is the delivery of YOU! YOU WHO CALLED ME etc is pure Black Metal magic. To praise a Metal vocal delivery on it's extremity and darkness seems redundant given the conventions of the genre, but this is easily one of those moments where you fall to your knees and remember what it meant when this stuff first blew your mind. W.O.W! Black Metal zealotry!

I'm too lazy to Youtube all of these, but I'll stick in times they appear in the songs on my computer, that way if you're interested you can click straight to the bit (or thereabouts) if you go and find them. Separated by vocalist.

Jorn Lande

Ark - Missing You (3:55-4:40)
Beyond Twilight - Crying (4:00-end) I'm aware this is like three minutes of the song, but I couldn't decide between the sort-of-screams and his sort-of-scatting
Avantasia - The Scarecrow (8:31-9:43) This was my introduction to Jorn. The "DEFIERS LIKE MEEEEEEEEEE" part is awesome, and then he just goes off

Matt Barlow

Iced Earth - Come What May (4:50-5:54) OK, The Crucible of Man wasn't a good album. Most of it is pretty crap, to be honest, but Matt's vocals here almost make up for it. Probably my favourite "Matt hits some stupidly high notes" moment in Iced Earth

Hansi Kirsch

Blind Guardian - Mordred's Song (2:14-2:50) I don't think this is Hansi's most technically impressive moment, but I love it anyway. Every time I listen to the song the "I've gone beyond the truth, it's just another lie" part gets stuck in my head for weeks afterwards.

Mathias Blad

Falconer - Substitional World (4:11-4:40) [I actually think Mathias has the nicest voice in metal. I think he does theatre, so that's probably a big part of it

Mike Mills

Toehider - Under the Future We Bury the Past (5:00-6:03) Jesus Fucking Christ.

Also going to use this as an opportunity to mention Eric Clayton of Saviour Machine. I can't pick out a specific moment, but I adore his voice.

Virgin Steele - Blood And Gasoline

Ahhh! I love you for feeling this song the same way I feel it. That exact vocal moment has always been a favorite of mine!

The spoken interlude around ~2:00. One of the best spoken bits in a song. The whole thing is great. Eerie, dramatic, and over-the-top.

What now lonely man...
Who's standing in the shadow of the streets
You're left alone with no helpin' hand beside you
You hide from the daylight... living in darkness
You got no friends you can trust nobody
Except for yourself...
The only shade that's beside you
Is the shade of LUCIFER
Laughing with a satanic smile...
And his friend death sharpens his SICKLE
You don't wanna die DO YOU? But you WILL
YOU WILL BURN IN HEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLL!

Their engineer/mixer did the satanic laugh. In an interview, Weikath (guitarist) said that the guy's wife was diagnosed with cancer at the time and so he put all his anger and pain into that laugh.
Who are you? The prince of darkness? Don't you have any friends?

Also nice to see so many Blind Guardian songs here, one of my favorite bands...personally I've always loved the bridge of The Eldar, Hansi gets all angry and powerful after the calm verses & chorus

Also, on the topic of Lifelover as VG brought up, the bit where he shudders/cums/whatever you want to call it in Alltid Aldrig? Piggybacking directly off "is it cold in here..or it just me?" it's just such a wonderful continuation of sounds.

Also for Carnivore, my personal favourite is the bit in Inner Conflict. I think that goes without too much explanation, but it's one of the most frustrated and repulsed sounding vocals I've ever heard. The entire song is, but that part in particular just makes me feel weighted.

I just skimmed through the videos to see if anyone else had posted it, I hadn't cracked your wall of text. Agreed on plenty of points there, the line from Sun of Tiphareth particularly always conjures mental images.

A couple more now that I've thought about it...

They've overdone the clean-sung chorus on recent albums but The Final Absolution's chorus still feels so triumphant and powerful as it comes in between the larynx-shattering shrieks of the verses

Such ranks of worship millions strong
Yet the chalice was poisoned
With his serpent standing strong
Witnessing the death of God

Also VG, your Roman Acupuncture mention reminded me of this

Luna! Celibate! Bedding the abyss!

And then all the howling before the "Heliocrat" verse.

The "Sombre proper to ecstacy" line, just in comparison with the way the verse opens and the squeaking guitar shuddering underneath it. Similarly, the "Sad version of grievous soul" line towards the end. An awful lot of the vocals from Obscura, Steeve's especially, qualify as favourites for me, but Clouded is the absolute apex of that album.

Big Kev. 'Nuff said.

Most of King Diamond's discography. Couldn't possibly narrow it down.

Surprised no one else mentioned Bethlehem and Landfermann. Purely demented hell-like vocals, straight from the bowels of insanity. a little childish at times, but every bit as primal and raw as needed or wanted.

He also handed the dynamics of his vocals especially well, being able to switch from brooding groggy vocals to the intense high pitched roars with ease. Made Dictius sound like performance art, lovely variation.

I've always loved the ending verse to this song. Such a shame Arthur left. He was invaluable to Cormorant's sound in my opinion

I could go on and on about Pallbearer, Blind Guardian, Ne Obliviscaris (blow me), Kamelot (Roy Khan is a God; this is indisputable), Matt Barlow, or Scald, but I'll stop with this one for now.

I second Isengard and Eucharist - "Fallen". Also, Morphogenesis' inclusion of Limbonic Art reminded me of the haunting shriek at the end of "In Mourning Mystique."

For harsh vocals, I think my personal favorite is Disembowelment - "Cerulean Transience of All My Imagined Shores." Total catharsis... For clean vocals, maybe Skyforger - Zobena Dziesma.

Blood and Gasoline is literally one of those tracks that I'm ashamed I didn't listen to more intensely earlier. It's just striking me so perfectly right now.

Some other notable choices:

Brulvahnatu's Cleaning Your Womb. I think his presentation suits the music wonderfully, he draws out the gutterals and has a nice sense of dynamics.

Impetigo's I Work For The Streetcleaner...I think this track is damn near perfect. His storytelling in gutterals are the most absurd and grotesque thing ever, it's the best. I WORK FOR THE STREETCLEEAANEEEEEERR

This guy has a pretty unique scream and there's also some great clean singing featured.

Since you mentioned Bethlehem:

Others:

and with Rhett Forester:

Could have chosen plenty of Priest songs (Halford is probably my number 1 frontman):

Obviously Dio:

O what a disgrace if such a despised and base race, which worships demons, should conquer a people which has the faith of omnipotent God and is made glorious with the name of Christ!

  1. Queen of the Reich - Queensryche (whenever I hear that opening scream I get the most goosebumps that ever goosebumped)
  2. Summer's Rain - Savatage (everything about that song is ...uhh... is.... )
  3. Dracula - Iced Earth (That was a vocal performance that'll be written in the metal history books)
  4. God of Emptiness - Morbid Angel (I loved the haunting element of it when I first heard it and I still do)
  5. Where dead Angels Lie - Dissection ( I guess it's a generic black metal voice but I love the shit out of it)
  6. I can go on and on and on and on and on but those 5 above are my favorite
I put a dollar in a change machine. Nothing changed.

cHEMOOOOOOOOOO

THERAAAPYYYYYYYYYY

Always loved the bit from 2:38 to 3:02.

Hordanes Land EP

Whole album is great, but I love the verse of this one in particular.

The ending bit with the spoken part.

"Because I am the spirit of their existence. I AM THEM!"

First few lines of this song after the crushing intro with the awesome riff and the lead underneath.

First few lines again.
Not so much the performance per se (which is still great, of course), but just how it starts abruptly like an explosion after the quiet outro of the previous song.

Whole thing.

This will always be one of my favorites, as one of the songs that really got me into the idea of extreme metal vocals in the first place, not to mention the incredibly technical and brutal instrumentation. First found out about these guys going out to the desert and riding dirt bikes with my friend's family and some of their friends, including former Disgorge bassist Ben Marlin, RIP. Also, from seeing them live, A.J. Magana is one intimidating motherfucker on stage.

Ditto to the above, this song came across my plate in my formative years. It was like listening to the music form of a classic horror film. The most horrible words I'd ever heard spoken in an incredibly brutal and sickening voice. Somehow they managed to make almost every word discernible despite the crazy deep growls and high shrieks:

This one's pretty different from the others mentioned above, but it's one that hit me hard during a pretty tough time in my life. One of my all time favorite songs, and one of my very favorite vocal performances:
