Well, it's definitely been a while since I started a thread, and today, I'd like to ask how you guys would approach writing catchy, clean riffs for vaguely afro-pop influenced indie music?

Thinking along the lines of these specific songs -

Vampire Weekend - Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa
1975s - Girls
The Smiths - Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now (Specifically the riff Johnny Marr plays after the chorus section)
Beatenberg - Beauty Like A Tightened Bow

My gear gets me a really nice tone for this kind of thing, and I've been listening to a lot of the above bands, plus Paul Simon, Talking Heads etc, and wondered if there was any specific chord shapes or 'flavours' (major 7ths seem useful, any others?) that you have used or discovered to write your own riffs.

Thanks guys, hope you're all keeping well!
