Everyday I pass this closed down music shop. In the window they have this incredible instrument I can't figure out what is (which isn't saying much btw). It's a string instrument, but on that I guess is played laying down. I.e. a box, rectangular, laying down, with strings. Looks like a santoor, but I'm not sure if that's it. Are there many instruments that looks like a santoor? Unlike the google images of santoors, it has nuts on the top of the box. And it has a lot of strings.
Anyone care to venture a lucky guess?

Is it a Guzheng?

Is a Guzheng ever just a rectangular box?

You're just a rectangular box.

What about a Harpejji?

so what you are describing is like every zither ever pretty much

there are like hundreds of types of zithers in the world

actually just look up "list of zithers" on Wikipedia and check each one

your description is far too vague, man. I'm sure I could identify it if you had a picture
Check out my band Disturbed

Yeah, I'm sorry. It's vague all right... Vague like a fox!

Maybe I can try and grab a pic on my way tomorrow.

I'm pretty sure it has several rows of strings, rather than en masse. Does that add any relevant info?

How dare you, sir? How very dare you? I'll have you know I'm a very rounded individuell. Rotund, even. Don't try and pin me into a box.
#9
Do you mean like the strings were grouped together? Could be a guitar zither.

Actually, why don't you just go into the store and ask?

Or, if it's closed, take a photo. But it does sound like it might be a zither.
You are now using UG Black.
You are now using UG Classic.

It would also be helpful to tell us where you live. If you are in the Middle East, it might be a kanun. But if you are in the Middle East you would probably be familiar with the kanun. I guess same if you were from Finland you would know the kantelle. Is it a specific music store? Like Arabic or Chinese or something?

Maybe a hammered dulcimer or yangqin if it looks like a santoor?

Came here to ask this.

Could be a guitar (pronounce gih-tar), depending on if you're right about some of the details on that description.

Hope this helps!

No, I'm not joking. So that's what it is? Is that common knowledge?
But thank you.
Nice that you didn't miss an opportunity to make me feel bad there. A lesser poster would have let the ball drop on that one. Good on ya, mate.

Looks like one to me, but I'm not an expert on them or anything. Kristen (theogonia) would be able to expand on it.

I was legitimately asking if you were joking. You gave the pretense of wide instrument knowledge with what you said about a guzheng, so I assumed you would have already given the thought of lap steel guitars.

If I made you feel bad though, that's a happy side bonus

alright. I'll give you that at that. my mind works pretty strange at times and something i did i forget i did screwed up my short term memory. but hey, it's given me some pretty great ideas over the years just misremebering other peoples ideas. isnt imagination fun?

but what a ride, yeah. now we now. sure want one now.
#30
Why would you want a lap guitar.

Just play a real guitar.

Nice try dreadie my boy, but it's actually a console steel. It's almost exactly the same instrument but vaguely different. A lap steel is a 5 lb 2×4 type thing that goes on your lap. A console is a 25 lb block of wood that stands on legs that are not attached in that picture. The two instruments play exactly the same (albeit the console steel having two or more necks usually to allow multiple tunings and generally 8 strings per neck rather than the standard, but not universal 6 on a lap steel). It's like how a sousaphone is almost exactly the same as a concert tuba but it's a different shape.
