So I'm 14 and I'm really getting serious about guitar rn. I currently have a peavey Vypyr vip 2 and my main guitar is the ESP EC 331 with esp pickups and I'm not overly happy with the tone I'm getting. I'm looking for a harsh black label society type tone and and I'm not getting it rn. I have heard the peavey Vypyr via 2 get some great hi gain tones and I'm not really getting them. Would buying Zakk wylde emgs and getting rid of the esp specialist pickups fix my problem? Or could my pickups possibly be too low or high? For the most part I'd only be using the tube 120 in my bedroom and I think it's a bit overkill for a practice amp, I would be gigging in the future but that could be in a few years when I start to make my own money. So should I save my money and get emgs pickups instead or should I get the tube?

Well, it won't be on the nose, but doesn't he use a Marshall amp? I'd start with dialing in the amp first. Pickups can help, but the recommendation from those who've been around says those are better after addressing the amp.

Google-fu updated: He was using a Marshall JCM800 until launching his Wylde Audio line. Peavey is good, but might be the wrong move here.

How much money do you have to spend for an amp?

Even if you get a JCM800 and EMG 81/85 you still aren't going to get close to Zakk's tone, he is playing through a full rack system. You can upgrade ypur amp and get closer though it will get you closer than the EMG's will.

I'm not familiar with the Tube 120 but I would imagine it has a model close to the JCM or at least one that is meant to be.

I'd imagine you should be able to get a close tone out of the VIP 2 you have. Zakk uses a chorus before the amp to fatten things up and also some sort of boost/tube screamer. The EMGs help with the gain and compression as well.

For Boosted Marshall tones I'd look into these amp models on your VIP:

- Butcher - it's modeled after classic british stacks - i.e. Marshall
- Classic/Budda - orange/red channel with the TSC and/or Boost
- 6534 on whatever emulates the Crunch channel of the real amp - Orange maybe?.
- XXX on the Rhythm and Lead - so Orange and Red I believe?

Don't go crazy with the gain.

And don't take this the wrong way but read the VIP manual - tons of very, very useful info in there.

Doesn't he just multitrack the crap out of everything? And yep, I'd try the butcher model on the VIP with a clean boost and maybe setup a very very short delay to thicken it up?

Multitrack in the studio and the chorus live last I checked but it's not really something I track. Learned it trying to figure out why my Black Label Chorus sucks tone in the loop of my Roadster - the pedal is instrument level only. . . .

what do you mean by 'tube 120'?

i assume watts, but that could be one of a half dozen different peavey amps.
