inb4 "there is no such thing as a guilty pleasure"/Dave Grohl quotes
inb4 child pornography/cocaine/murder/jaywalking

I don't really have any really guilty pleasures but I have a homework assignment for tomorrow involving transcribing and comparing the original Police version of Every Breath You Take with Carol Welsman's jazz cover and I realized that, for a pretty typically "guilty-pleasure" song, I really enjoy it. Probably because the Police are among my favorite bands.

I also eat cheap-ass ramen on a semi-regular basis and not because I can't afford anything else.

Whenever I go visit my parents for an extended period of time, I can watch TV, which often results in me watching the Big Bang Theory. It's far from being the greatest show in the world (and in fact a lot of people hate it and I can see why it's not for everyone) but I enjoy it from time to time.

Probably listening to really cheap pop music.

Like I love Ke$ha, Jessie J and shit.

I dislike both Ke$ha and Jessie J's music, but Lady Gaga and Katy Perry's is catchy af. Bruno Mars is also a really genuinely talented dude and interesting musician.

Gaga and Perry are my jams.

Bruno Mars I'm not too into unfortunately. Nor am I into Ed Sheeran

Hah, I can't stand Ed Sheeran Although I've heard he's a pretty good guitarist.

I haven't really seen him play outside of rhythm stuff, but he seems solid

He doesn't sound terrible at least. I just wish he didn't rip off Marvin Gaye so obviously

I wish I liked the cliche cookie cutter pop music you all think is so catchy. I like Babymetal but that's because Takayoshi is among my favorite 10 guitarists of all time and their songs are formatted very well. If pop music was like that more often I could say I liked it.

I watch bill nye the science guy and enjoy it and still learn stuff. Neil Degresse Tyson was in my dreams last night. He gave a lecture at the hall I had performance at afterwards.

Sometimes I just eat snacks like doritos, banana chips, lays etc or a dessert like a slice of cake for lunch because I like eating those things but I'm usually too full after regular meals to eat them.

To be fair, I didn't say I liked it. In fact, for the most part, I hate it. However, it is catchy, and that's not easy to achieve.

I wouldn't call those guilty pleasures. Although NDT's image has really gone downhill for me over the past few months.

It's not catchy. The solo to stairway to heaven is catchy. I remembered the whole thing after hearing it just once. Giant Steps is catchy. Simple =\= catchy. Those musicians are the equivalent of a little girl drawing a stick figure but she's a hot little girl and people buy it from her because they think it's culture.

What's wrong with Neil? He's very intelligent and has a very strong personality. He might not know any particulars about string theory like Laurence Krauss but he does know a lot and he's nice on top of that.

I also never said simple means catchy. I also never implied something needed to be simple to be catchy. Most music I listen to is catchy but it almost always needs to have some level of sophistication or interest. Hell, Esperanza Spalding has really catchy music and it's not easily accessible, and it's all really genial music. A shit ton of top 40 trash isn't even catchy, so it doesn't even have that going for it. Lady Gaga and Katy Perry (and dare I say the more recent iteration of Justin Bieber) just happen to have really catchy songs, which make them among the more palatable top 40 pop.

From what I've read he's kind of a condescending, pretentious douche to pretty much everybody, especially anybody who isn't in the realm of science. A lot of what he says are unimaginative platitudes that try desperately to make him sound wise when they're pretty mundane. I think he has his merits as an intellectual, but he tries way too hard to be Carl Sagan it's untrue.
#18
The problem I have with folks like Tyson and Bill Nye etc etc is that they'll argue that philosophy is done with and science has taken over it

which displays an absolutely fundamental misunderstanding of what science does, where science comes from, and what makes sure that science does what it can do as well as it can do

so basically they're actually not very good advocates of science, but dilettantes who have a contract with television
#19
NDT is a failed Carl Sagan because he's a douche to everyone who doesn't agree with him while Sagan was pretty chill.

That's pretty much what I meant about Neil being condescending to everybody who isn't in the realm of science because at various guest lectures he's done at different universities he's repeatedly bashed philosophy departments and majors for essentially being useless and even obsolete. Nye is also pretty bad as you say although not nearly as much.
#22
I didn't get that vibe at all. Michio Kaku, Brian Greene, Neil Tyson, Bill Nye, all seem pretty cool. Laurence Krauss is the one that seems like a little douchebag. I've seen like half a dozen debates and Neil is the most well going and well rounded.

I do think that philosophy has gone down some very anti-realist avenues recently but that's like using eugenics and some of the wackier quantum physics theories (which sometimes sit very close next to philo) as a means to dismiss science

I'm cynical but only in a lives-in-a-barrel/wanks-in-public kind of way

Missing the point, peppers.

If you're a science doing sciency things then yeah ok cool but what everyone else is saying is that they have a very cut and dried view of what is 'better for people'. One that happens to conveniently ignore that philosophy explains much of the floaty, hypothetical unknowable that pure data and facts could not.

I mean, at its base, science (and pretty much everything we know) is made of philosophy.

I watch a ton b-grade horror flicks and tv shows. I've seen all of them, the classics, the crap on the 13 days till Halloween season the sci-fi channel like ghost hunters, the low budget Indy projects put out every year that fly under the radar and don't make it to theater. I like anything scary, spooky, etc even goosebumps and those old 90s shows like are you afraid of the dark
#28
I like to curl up on my couch under a warm blanket and watch TV on winter days.
#29
That previous by me wasn't "guilty", just an admission of being lazy as hell on winter days.

Here's a guilty pleasure: When I'm leaving work in the morning is when the management people are coming IN. There is a passage between the two front security doors that is about 15 feet long. There are doors on both ends. When I'm walking through there on the way out, I like to drop a fart bomb in that enclosed space for the managers to enjoy on their way through.
