I'm currently learning AC/DC "Shook Me All Night Long" and I have the intro, chord changes, and solo down pretty good. One thing I notice is that I let open strings keep ringing while changing chords during the verses (C-G-C-G-D, G-D-G-D-G). On the record, Angus seems to cut the chords off in a more staccato way before changing to the next chord. I've tried to replicate this muting both with the palm of my strumming hand and by laying down my fretting hand before the chord change, but it's all very inefficient movement for me and neither seems to work well.

So my question is: what is the proper technique to learn in order to get it to sound right?

It's just muting the strings with your fretting hand, but if it's not a technique you've used before then it is going to feel a little awkward or un-natural - like everything else you just need to practice.
