Friend renting his house to me starting next month with a full single floor layout (3br, 2ba, living, kitchen, & dining all for me). Invoke your best inner interior designer and halp with picking out cool ideas. Preferably modern and on Amazon Prime or some other easy to buy establishment.

So far in my cart:
a memory foam mattress
Ikea bed
a Yamaha soundbar for the TV. Saw this listed on several review sites

Know of any neat wall hangings and such?

...modes and scales are still useless.

modern and kinda minimal / clean / understated classiness

it's just a regular ass house nothing fancy. bedrooms and stuff on one side and kitchen / living / dining on the other.

Get some nice sleek standing lamps then.

In terms of wall coverings, there's heaps of places online where you can get great canvas prints and stuff. Just buy a couple of those and you're set.

I would suggest getting a California Republic flag to hang if you have a bar. Even though you don't live here you wish you did and it's a great flag to drink in front of

That flag looks like thinly veiled communism

also memory foam mattresses are kinda overrated in my opinion, you're better off with something like a 2000 pocket spring with a memory topper

I agree, although some people aren't as sensitive regarding back pain and general body aching.

We make midranged priced memory foam mattresses where I work (probably ranging anywhere from $600-1200) and I can sometimes get them for free. Very unimpressed, and I wake up aching a lot. I'd be very upset if I bought one full price.

That bed frame doesn't look very good quality for the price.

it's ikea, it'll be a dodgy mess in a year's time.

I finally sucked it up and bought a pricey well made solid wood bed last time because I was fed up of ikea shit that never lasts and ends up falling apart somehow.

ikea's great if you don't plan to have that furniture for too long though (eg renting for a year or two here and there and plan to ditch the furniture between moves)

etsy is pretty tight for interesting decoration stuff btw

This has not been my experience with ikea furniture. The vast majority of my parents' furniture is from Ikea and it's lasted decades and multiple moves. I'm sure some of their products are lower quality than others but you (not you specifically just in general) have to be smart about what you buy and how you put it together. I do prefer other companies designs sometimes and they're nearly always more expensive than ikea but I wouldn't automatically trust them on quality like i would with ikea.

just an update for those who care (nobody):

the new place is about 85% set up. I am very proud. May take some pics within the next few weeks.

No shame in saying that most of it was curated from Ikea....ok the place looks like a got-damn ikea showroom. But trust me, it works.

Check out Wayfair, they upload "room sets" by professional interior designers, and all the furniture is sold on their site:

https://www.wayfair.com/Get-The-Room

Careful though, some of the stuff is fucking expensive. You can probably replace it with the cheaper options on their site with a similar design.

Setting up a house with Ikea stuff is great, over time you'll find superior quality furniture to Ikea and realise which pieces to replace.

Make sure to get a solid wood floor. Laminate floors sound like crap when you tap dance!

Honestly Ikea stuff has served me very well. I have several big items from them that have lasted fine for several years and are brought to the new house. My Malm cab, especially, has aged beautifully and is a no brainer fit in the new bedroom for its simplistic good looks. I find their stuff to be the perfect balance of being cheap, aesthetically passable to great, and sturdy enough for the job. I'm ok with the particle board makeup, which are still solid enough and give plenty of mileage. What I really like is that their cheap stuff is still decent in quality, compared to others' cheap stuff which are mostly horseshit. I'd much rather spend my money on other things and am appreciative that Ikea is an option which gives good-enough luxury at bargain prices in one convenient place. With that said, fucking cheap fucks took away the free-food-after-spending-$100 deal right as I drop a few thousand on them.

Materialism is philosophically socialism, and shit. Minimalism is the true way. Just buy any big television flatscreen that is the cheapest price at the moment, and don't bump such a useless thread
.

Not gonna lie, I bought my dining table from Ikea about 4 years ago, and it still goes great. And the bonus of Ikea furniture is that if you're savvy enough, you can disassemble it when you move to save space.
