I currently work in Logic exclusively and I love it. For my own music it's been fine, but my band requires a lot heavier use of synths and stuff. Logic has some pretty good synths, but nothing that really blows me away. Currently I use a mix of Logic synths and vsts along with patches from my Roland Jupiter 50 keyboard, which works great for demos, but doesn't really have the radio-quality sound that is required these days.

I've been thinking about getting Ableton Live to up my game in the electronic aspects of music-making, but I'm not sure if it'll really be worth the price. We don't do EDM or anything like that, but more along the lines of 21Pilots, Passion Pit, etc.

Is Ableton Live that much better than my current setup with Logic and a nice external keyboard?

Any other suggestions are welcome, as well. Obviously they gotta be available for Mac.

Not at all, Logic > Ableton any day in my book.

You might just need to purchase a good synth pack or get a synth keyboard or synth brain with some better sounds.

Look at NI (especially Massive) and IK (Sample Tank):

Massive has been a studio staple where I worked for quite a few years.
Also check fruity loops - it's a standalone program but for the price integrates a lot of synths and weird fx. I can't get along with it but others love it.
