Saw this on another forum and I thought it would be fun to run by the members up here.

So - you have $500 and need to get a guitar and something (amplifier, PA, etc.) that you can play a gig and rehearse through it. For the sake of argument, lets not consider cables.

It can be new or used...

So what would you use?
#2
ok i'll play. i'll even go with things I have already

Vintage SG -style guitar. copy of early 60s spec SG. $150 used
Peavey Valveking 1x12 $200-250 used
Eno Music OD-9 $25 used
Morley Classic Wah $50 used

$425-475 depending

I know you may need a tuner but someone will have one

Washburn WG-587 or Jackson JS-22-7 and either a Vypyr VIP3 or Jet City 50W combo.
Guitar/Bass:
Schecter: Damien 6/Stilletto Extreme 5, Squier: Bullet HSS*, Washburn RX10*/WG-587, Agile Septor 727
*mods

Amps/FX
Peavey: Vypyr 30/Max 112 (200W), ISP: Decimator

Used Bogner Alchemist 212, 40W with Celestion G12M Greenback (Brown sound) and Celestion G12H Anniversary (classic '60s dinosaur rock tone) speakers. I've picked up 1 for $400 from GC Used in excellent condition.

NOS Mahogany Squier Tele, HB + SC from a mom and pop store for $70.

#11
A used Jackson MIJ DK2M Pro. $250 if I shop around.

remaining $250 would go towards DAW software like Overloud TH3.

While I'd go that route too for home-playing, he specified ability to gig. :P

Based off what's on the used market right now where I live:
Epiphone Dot (150 euros)
Jet City JCA50H (250 euros)
Harley Benton 112 Vintage (70 euros)

Which would leave me with 30 euros to find a tuner, which is possible. A beat up TU-2 or TU-3 or a Korg Pitchblack probably can be found at that price no problem.
#13
I'd probably go with Tech 21 TM30 ($280 used)
Dean ZX ($160)
Joyo Vintage overdrive ($25) and a used delay if I can fit it in the budget, like a
Modtone Vintage Analog Delay $50

I have a tuner app on my phone, so I'll live with that.

I meant a PA in case of someone wanting to buy a PA speakers or used PA system for guitar, I guess that can work too.

500 bucks is a little cheap IMO, especially with the CAD so low but sure. This is also obviously without haggling.

This would be my 500 CAD rig:

Peavey Valveking 112 combo $250:

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-amp-pedal/city-of-toronto/peevey-valveking-112-combo/1212293244?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

Ibanez RG370DX $200:

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-guitar/oshawa-durham-region/black-ibanez-rg-series-rg370dx/1229961126?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

And then about $50 extra for pedals so I would go:

Joyo Vintage OD $30:

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-amp-pedal/markham-york-region/joyo-vintage-overdrive/1228913107?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

Joyo Digital Delay $30:

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-amp-pedal/city-of-toronto/joyo-digital-delay/1228912797?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

Total: $510

I would be able to get some decent sounds with that IMO. Sure, its about 10 bucks over budget but I would imagine I could get both those Joyo pedals for 45 bucks or so. I think its the same seller too!

And here is one for 500 USD (660 CAD):

Peavey Valveking 112 combo $250:

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-amp-pedal/city-of-toronto/peevey-valveking-112-combo/1212293244?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

Squier Classic Vibe '50s Stratocaster $350:

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-guitar/city-of-toronto/squier-classic-vibe-stratocaster-50s-white/1216871524?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

Joyo Vintage OD $30:

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-amp-pedal/markham-york-region/joyo-vintage-overdrive/1228913107?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

Joyo Digital Delay $30:

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-amp-pedal/city-of-toronto/joyo-digital-delay/1228912797?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

Total: $660

Only difference I guess is the guitar since unfortunately there weren't a ton of amps for sale at a decent price this time.

Since my rig ATM is great and costs around $500-$600 I think this is one of the best options (and what I use daily):

Guitar:
Ibanez RG3EXFM1 (Discontinued but now is on the used market for $199)
http://www.musicgoroundfortworth.com/p/509054/used-ibanez-rg3exfm1-electric-guitar-red?gclid=CjwKEAiAkuLDBRCRguCgvITww0YSJAAHrpf-eCLCjsgguOeRko0syfQ5BZTlnZ4TKFOnKUrAw6xzIxoC6tPw_wcB

Amp:
BOSS Katana 100 (Is starting to go used for $300)
http://www.zzounds.com/item--BOSKTN100?siid=190078&-KHIf5N77ARe9OS9FPRgFrS4sgG_LfW2HV6sJwjgA6hoC30rw_wcB=

This is the Rig I use and I think it's pretty great for $500 it's pretty amazing what used guitars you can find for around the same price that could be even better.

I'd snag up this used Jet City JCA50-212 for $350

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Used/Jet-City-Amplification/Jca5012c-Tube-Guitar-Combo-Amp.gc

Can't go wrong with a Jackson Dinky in a pinch. - JS22 for $120

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Used/Jackson/Dinky-Standard-Solid-Body-Electric-Guitar-112805620.gc

And a Boss DS1 for shits and giggles. $25

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Used/Boss/DS1-Distortion-Effect-Pedal-112824351.gc

Just shy of $500 and can gig in a pinch.
Gear: Gibson Les Paul Studio, Gibson SG Special, Fender Stratocaster, Fender Telecaster, Fender Jazzmaster, Gretsch Pro Jet, Carvin C350, Epiphone ES-339 P90, Epiphone ES-335 Pro. Peavey 6505, Sovtek MIG-100, Vox AC30, Peavey XXX.
#19
I've got some videos on Youtube of me playing through less than $200 of gear:

Peavey Raptor Plus EXP that I bought used for $40.
Digitech Bad Monkey bought new for $40.
Peavey Express 112 amp bought used for $100.

The phone I recorded those videos on would cost at least three times the amount of that rig on its own. And it's loud enough to gig with, even though the tone from the pickups of the EXP is not exactly stellar.

As for all-new gear... it's kind of difficult with Canadian prices (source: Long And McQuade's website) especially if you're looking for a rig you could get away with at a band practice.

This would be my sub-$500CDN rig that'd be somewhat suitable for band practices and small gigs:

Amp: Boss Katana 50-watt - $289.00

https://www.long-mcquade.com/74288/Guitars/Guitar-Amps/Boss/KATANA-Guitar-Amplifier-50watt-1-12---Speaker.htm

Guitar: Jackson JS11 Dinky - $199.99

https://www.long-mcquade.com/48261/Guitars/Electric/Fender_Musical_Instruments/JS11_Dinky_Electric_Guitar_-_Gloss_White.htm

Total cost of the rig before taxes is $488.99, meaning you might even have just enough to spare for a cheap cable and a handful of picks. Taxes will bring this more into the $550-600 range, I think, but if we're still going with the idea of the price being American $$$, we're still way under budget. But before taxes, the price of this rig is super affordable, and 50 watts of solid state power will probably do for volume over a drummer in a pinch. If my 20-watt Orange Micro Dark can manage it through a 2x12, I see no reason the Katana can't either.
Q: Favourite Pink Floyd song?
A: The one where they get wicked high and play Emin and A for an hour.

Super affordable, easily transportable, and in great condition.

ESP LTD MH100 ($170):
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Used/ESP/LTD-MH100QMNT-Solid-Body-Electric-Guitar-112547032.gc
Orange Micro Terror ($100):
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Used/Orange-Amplifiers/MT20-Micro-Terror-20W-Tube-Guitar-Amp-Head-112821304.gc
Avatar 2x12 ($220):
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Used/Avatar/2x12-Guitar-Cabinet-112728126.gc

All used from GC, with $10 to spare.

EDIT: I'm not a pedals kind of guy, I like plain old amp only rigs.

In this day and age it wouldn't be hard to do on the used market, New a little tougher but in the end its just a matter of preference, Other than the guitar I could do it with amps I already have, Although I have been looking at some First Act VW Garage masters just to say I have one. keeping it well under that $500 mark, So here we go

Guitar... First Act.. $100
Amp... Kustom Quad 100dfx... $200 +/- Loud as hell.
Optional line out amp... Peavey TNT 130... bought for $50, Value?... $200 +/-
Total... $500
#26
I will go with one I have already done.

Used Fender FM100H. ~$100
Used B52 LS-412A ~$80
Used Boss SD-1 $25
Used Boss NS-2 $30
Used Boss MT-2 $20 plus ~25 for soldering iron and some small parts for modding
New Jackson JS22-7 $200... Stylin' now

Rest of money put towards beer. Preferably Lagunitas IPA.
Metal all day!
#27
My Peavey Ultra Plus 112 which I bought for about $320 (with new tubes and a Celestion G12T) last year
A used Epiphone SG-G400 or one of the newer JS series Jacksons which can be bought for about $150
Some cheap ass chorus pedal for up to $30
And I'd be good to go.

I'll go with one setup I already have:

Agile AL-2000 Floyd B-stock (finish issues) new with hard case, shipped, $200.
Line 6 Pod XT Live, used, $100
Carvin PM-12A powered PA speaker with 12"LF driver, 1" HF driver, 400W RMS, used, $185.

The AL-2000 is an LP-alike, but with 24 frets, "tilted" neck heel and a cheap Floyd and gold hardware (!).

The Pod is still very usable, highly tweakable.

PM12A came from a DJ who got married and had a baby to support two months later.. I told him he could borrow it back if/when he starts gigging again.

I have an amp stand that puts it up and tilts it back a bit...

squier 51 used ~$150

used jb and decent tuners used $70

Peavey Classic 50 (more than loud enough for anything). I picked up one for 275 bucks a few months back.
Then Id check ebay for a used carvin bolt kit guitar (pretty damn nice for dirt cheap) or a MIM or Squier VM Tele or HSS Strat.

Probably have money left over for chicken wings and beer

I'm totally with you on the SC-XD...best budget amp, period. Tube power amp plus digital modeling pre-amp/FX=budget gold.

On the guitar, I'd get any of the Ibanez ArtCore semi-hollow bodied guitars used, once again for around $200.

With what's left over, I'd pay a luthier to properly set the guitar up, because it probably has not been set up by a pro.

For legit vintage guitar tones I like the SCXD a lot and gig with one often in local taverns and juke joints. For modern Brit hi gain I would go Jet City or Laney.

Going by what things are going for today, not by "well I got an awesome deal this one time on ....", and I ONLY have $500 and NEED gear for that night, and hypothetically speaking, I can get pick this up used right away:

- USA Peavey Tracer Deluxe '89 ($300)
- Peavey Bandit 112 SilverStripe ($100)
- BOSS ME-50 Multi-Effects Pedal ($100)
