For the record, I only looked at the headline of that article, and when the blurb said it had nothing to do with Time Travel I stopped reading

It's neat actually, altho the site looks like an energy drink commercial

evan that is considered sexual assault

self crit or ban

also lets be real, most popular science articles are sorta click-baity cuz long titles with lots of academic wording doesnt come off as too exciting

but hey, i guess it exposes people to stuff or something iunno

Also not to waste agood thread, Bryce (i think) showed me this article earlier and it is pretty interesting

I do not understand a single thing in that article beyond "scientists do weird shit, results useless." Translate it to layman for me please?

Scientists shot lasers at atoms, crystals don't jiggle like jell-o?

Basically if you have a regular crystal, it's just a solid with a structure which repeats itself in the three spatial dimensions.

The main thing to note is that you don't really need constant interference or influence from outside the observed system for it to have that structure - for instance you don't need God's unchanging handkeeping the singular atoms in place or something like that. However you can demand that the right physical conditions are met in the system and around it - temperature, pressure, volume, etc. - as long as they don't actively introduce work into the system.

Also don't quote this as scientific fact or show this to a chemist or something - I'm trying to get to the following example. Water is able to form crystals we know as regular ice but only as long as the right conditions are met - the most common set of these conditions is 0°C at atmospheric pressure. The point here is that the crystalline structure of the ice is inherent to the matter, you don't need some kind of machine or divine intervention to keep it that way.

So time-crystals are just an expansion of that into the fourth dimension - time. Instead of having a system of atoms which repeats itself in all three spatial dimensions, you have a system which repeats itself periodically in time. "But Jam" you will ask, "when I push my child on a swing and he/she swings back and forth periodically, is that not a system which repeats itself in time? Surely that doesn't make my child a time crystal". You are correct. While your child is certainly a special snowflake which deserves all the love and attention you can give it, it's not a time crystal. In order for the swing to keep swinging you need to push it, you need to introduce constant work into the system. As soon as you'll stop pushing the swinging will start to dye down and eventually stop. The temporal periodicity (shit repeating in time) is not an inherent part of your system, it's not inherent to it, it is not the ground state of your system - also these are terms you want to use for very small systems, not a child on a swing set but whatever, I'm writing this out on a guitar forum.

But yeah, basically the scientists were looking for a system of particles - in this case ytterbium Yt+ ions but ther have been similar systems proposed composed of calcium ions for instance - which will keep on repeating itself in time in the right conditions, without having to introduce any work from outside the system. Like for instance a strain of ions going around in a circle. Now you have to be careful with how you want to set up your system. For instance they used a magnetic field from what I've read so I'm guessing they had it set up in a way which couldn't in itself produce a periodically changing state, because charged particles going around in a magnetic field is very basic physics and nothing new. Also they had to look out for stuff like resonance and the inherent vibration of nuclei so that they weren't just observing some long known phenomenon. Even I don't know how exactly this works cuz it's proper quantum physics but basically they had to be sure that they weren't influencing the particles in the same way you'd push a child on a swing.

Anyway what they eventually achieved or at least what they claim to have achieved is producing a system of particles which oscillated in a constant manner, which can't really be explained with influences from outside the system and most importantly this system of particles refused to stop oscillating - like ice refuses to just collapse into a non-crystalline structure. And for bonus attention biscuits they and the researchers before them of course named this kind of system 'time crystals' because it sounds a lot more interesting that 'shit that moves around periodically on its own'.

It's very interesting because we've never really observed something like this before. You won't be drinking your soda with frozen time crystals and porn probably won't get any better because of it but it does challenge and/or expand our understanding of the most basic properties of our universe. Think of it like the Higgs boson from a while back - it doesn't have a lot of immediate practical significance for our species but it's insanely important for how we understand our universe.

edit:

I was really trying to hyperlink this but the code is shit. God's Unchanging Hand is a pretty cool song I know.

This. Use your time crystals to go back to 2006 and convince me not to drop science.
